What I disliked and found useless about this guide was its unreliability; while the authors made no bones about describing the most obvious tourist traps as such, there were other places, quite charming , that were described so minimally as to create no interest, other places that are absolute tourist traps that were described as charming, and just no reliability as to what would we an interesting place for a non-tourist kind of traveller.
For example, Spilli, which is essentially a tourist trap way station between Rethymno and the south, is described as some kind of moutain heaven, when in fact there is virtually no reason at all to stop there for more than a piss (in fact Heracles Room's is described so glowingly you almost have to stop there, when in fact you hear a busy road from the place at night...not exactly tranquil, and while Mr. Heracles was himself really nice, i did not find him to be the resource for hiking that the guide suggested he would be, his English is just not good enough).
Ditto Soughia, a town in the south from Chania, which is another tourist trap full of bars, yeah, very pleasant ones compared to the north, but still there are about 10, tons of lights, two loud discos, and a whole ton of partiers, to the point that one could not even sleep at night for the drunks talking loudly wending there way home, and you cannot see the stars well for the light pollution; this place is described as nearly sleeply. And only 15 old folk live there in winter, it lives solely by tourism, so there is no feel for it as a village.
On the other hand the old town of Chania is an obnoxious tourist trap, but described in glowing terms, whereas Rethymno, which , although full of tourists is also full of Greeks, its a living Greek town, even the old town, much more so, whereas the book sees no charm in Rethymno (i took hundreds of photos there of old buildings doors and people)
etc etc.
