If you read all the reviews, it seems like there isn't a single good travel guide to China, period. Every one of them is outdated the day it comes out; authors don't do a good enough job updating; authors don't get the real China, etc. etc.
Then again, if you're going to travel in this vast country for a limited amount of time, which is the case with vast majority of these guides' readers, you won't notice any of these complaints. This guide will be offer enough information for you to digest, you won't feel much is left out (you won't know about it, but more importantly, you also wouldn't have time for more anyway.) And as is always the case with Rough guides, you'll find it well written, practical and very useful, containing a decent amount of cultural insight and far more text than pictures, which in my opinion is always a win.
I read every single page about the places I've visited on a short two-week trip to China, and I did not feel that this book really let me down.
