Since the Conservative party lost power in 1997, Britain has had an unmistakably upbeat air, celebrated in the press as "Cool Britannia". Yet even without these cultural innovations--its vibrant music scene and burgeoning film industry, its fashionable new restaurants and bars--Britain would still be an attractive destination. If you follow this guide, you will see the pretty pictures with your own eyes! Forget about DK, Eyewitness, Knopf or the others with the glossy photos. This was the one that got us there in England and Wales!! We brought three travel guides with us and this was the one we turned to again and again to find the best places to visit, the best scenery, the most scenic routes, the most interesting little tidbits of history (encapsulated in few words). It was absolutely wonderful and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

This book is physically huge, but in terms of details and depth it may as well be a comic book regarding England. Little background on cities, hotels, hostels, etc once you get out of the main cities. I guess I screwed up and should have gotten an England only book but at the time of planning the whole island was a possibility. I left it in the hostel 1/2 through my trip in Southampton as it wasn't worth carrying anymore.
