Amazon.co.uk

This is undoubtedly the greatest love story ever written, spawning a host of imitators on stage and screen, including Leonard Bernstein's smash musical West Side Story, Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet filmed in 1968, and Baz Luhrmann's postmodern film version Romeo + Juliet. The tragic feud between "Two households, both alike in dignity/In fair Verona", the Montagues and Capulets, which ultimately kills the two young "star-crossed lovers" and their "death-marked love" creates issues which have fascinated subsequent generations. The play deals with issues of intergenerational and familial conflict, as well as the power of language and the compelling relationship between sex and death, all of which makes it an incredibly modern play. It is also an early example of Shakespeare fusing poetry with dramatic action, as he moves from Romeo's lyrical account of Juliet--"she doth teach the torches to burn bright!" to the bustle and action of a 16th-century household (the play contains more scenes of ordinary working people than any of Shakespeare's other works). It also represents an experimental attempt to fuse comedy with tragedy. Up to the third act, the play proceeds along the lines of a classic romantic comedy. The turning point comes with the death of one of Shakespeare's finest early dramatic creations--Romeo's sexually ambivalent friend Mercutio, whose "plague o' both your houses" begins the play's descent into tragedy, "For never was a story of more woe/Than this of Juliet and her Romeo". --Jerry Brotton

My all-time fave... 13. April 2001
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
Probably the best book of that genre I've ever read. Shakespeare's genius speaks for itself, actually: his skills in language and poetry are unbeaten, and, like in most of his plays, there are thousands of small details and hints the reader would never find out without an interpretation. As to Romeo and Juliet, the plot is both entertaining, surprising and offers and end that could certainly not contain more tragedy.

Great version, easy to read on Kindle 2. Januar 2011
Von John W. Crockett - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
I don't know about all the books that are available on Kindle, but this one was formatted to make it extremely easy to read on the Kindle. I also like that the book doesn't have any extras, like interpretations or dozens of footnotes to get in the way of reading the story. I recommend this to anyone who likes the story and students, too.

A Timeless Classic 13. März 2011
Von Just The Classics - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
When two star-crossed lovers meet, it's love at first sight. Despite being from rival families, Romeo and Juliet forsake their own families and risk everything to be together, which ends in tragedy.

Written over 400 years ago, this has to be one of my all-time favorite stories. I can't believe I had to be made to read this story when I was in high-school. Even then, I enjoyed the story, but I resisted reading it. I think the version I had to read then had been summarized somewhat and even though the story kept many of the dramatic elements, a lot of the comedic points were lost, at least on me. I like being able to read the full version to get the full impact of the story.

Timeless Classic of Doomed Lovers 11. August 2011
Von K.A.Goldberg - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This timeless classic by William Shakespeare retains its power several centuries later. This story of doomed lovers from rival families in 16th Century Verona, Italy has fascinated readers around the world. Dashing young Romeo and Juliet are truly in love, but circumstances are against them as they belong to rival families. The family feuding means their love is forbidden - and dangerous. After the grief-stricken Romeo kills Tybalt (as Tybalt killed his friend Mercutio), Romeo is exiled under penalty of death should he return. Deeply in love with Juliet, he returns, and the tragedy continues, culminating in the accidental deaths of both lovers.

Few stories resonant so well with young, romantic, and older readers as does this timeless classic. This ris one of my favorites stories of all time, and some acclaim it as Shakespeare's greatest tragedy (inspiring debate with fans of Hamlet, MacBeth, etc.). There is even an excellent hip-hop film version using the orginal old English that Shakespeare used. This timeless classic is well worth your time.
