Kurzbeschreibung

This will be the third in the Roman Conquests series (following Italy and Spain) and one of those with the most obvious appeal. While Rome was struggling for her very survival against the Carthaginians in the Second Punic War, Philip V of Macedon attempted to take advantage of their apparent vulnerability by allying with Hannibal and declaring war. For the time being the Romans negated this threat by shrewd use of allies to keep Philip occupied in Greece and Illyria. Once Carthage was defeated, however, the Romans were free to turn their full attention to settling the score. The stage was set for the clash of two of the most successful military systems of the ancient world, the Roman legions versus the Macedonian phalanx. Though sorely tested, the legions emerged victorious from the epic battles of Cynoscephelae and Pydna, and the home of Alexander the Great fell under the power of Rome, along with the rest of Greece, the cradle of Western Civilization, which had a profound effect on Roman culture and society.

Like the other volumes in this series, this book gives a clear narrative of the course of these wars, explaining how the Roman war machine coped with formidable new foes and the challenges of unfamiliar terrain and climate. Specially commissioned color plates bring the main troop types vividly to life in meticulously researched detail.

REVIEWS

..". a well written summary of historical events...very useful guide... Philip Matyszak has undertaken no simple task in presenting such an outline of the turmoil and embittered diplomacy of the period. The question is whether he's managed to maintain his usual standard in the face of such complexity. He succeeds by something of a literary photo finish."UNRV, 04/2010

A unusal subject 22. Juni 2010

The PUNIC WARS are well known. There are many books about the battles and soldiers. However there is not much information about the other Roman conquests. The time period is very late in the second Punic War and after. This is the series of wars that finally put Rome on to wield domination. Philip 5 had sided with Carthage, but had done little to help. Once Hannibal was defeated, Rome went after him. This meant that Rome also became involved with the rest of Greece. A series of wars occurred which made both Macedonia and Greece, Provence of Rome.
The Phalanx of Alexander was defeated by Roman legions.
This is a complicated story. Greece has Many city states and confederation. The Romans tried to make allies, but instead made enemy's. The cast of charters is great and I had to reread the book twice to understand all the changes in allies.
the book had some good maps, but not enough. I still did not know who was who in the Greek alliances.
As there are so few books on this tropic, if you are interested in this period of Roman history you should read it.

Pretty good coverage of how Greece fell to the Romans 15. April 2011

Philip Matyszak's book proves to be a very readable and easily to follow narrative on how Roman Republic added Greece to their empire. I thought he painted the picture of Greek politics pretty well in how byzantine they were against Rome and against each other. In the end however, Rome decided to give the Greeks some proper structure and just took over the entire region.

The crux of the book lies in the struggle between Rome and Macedonia over the domination of Greece. Macedonia simply lacked the resources and manpower to fight an entity like Rome by herself. Still, Greek politics kept Rome at bay for a while as they try to balance the scale. The book clearly pointed out that one of the main reasons for Macedonia's military defeats lies in their bad tendency to pick a battlefields not favorable to their phalanx system. In the third Macedonian War, it was clear that Macedonia's king, Perseus, was totally clueless in terms of Roman movements and intents. The author made it clear that utter lack of military intelligence was the main cause of their defeat.

The book is generally written on an introductory level but considering that not much has been written about this subject, anyone should find this book to be quite educational and enlightening. There isn't much detail study in this book between working of the Roman Legion and the Macedonian Phalanx that made the difference. I have always thought that Alexander the Great's phalanxes were far more flexible then later version fielded by Philip V and his son. In some way, they may look a like but totally different. I thought the author should have gone into that a bit further since lacking manpower and resources, Macedonia's only chance to win was by battlefield victory.

But overall, this book come highly recommended for anyone interested in this subject matter. Despite of the steep price (based on British price of 19.95 pounds per book, making it nearly $40.00 in our money. Ouch!!) it well worth reading and being educated at the same time.
Very good series on Roman history 9. Mai 2012

I have all the books in this series, and they are all well written, and squeeze as much information into this sized book as possible. If you want more information, get Britannica; otherwise if you are just looking a a fairly in depth description of the different campaigns that Rome waged, this should do.

For an idea of how in depth these books are, this one on Greece and Macedonia gives a considerable amount of information not just about the campaigns, but about the complex conditions of the people being invaded, and what their motivations were. Each book is unique, and one of the things that makes the time period of this book so is that Rome had not become the juggernaut that history reflects on them as. At the point in history that Rome was still bringing Greece into the fold, they still hadn't subdued Carthage and Hannibal was still running around Italy with elephants.

The only reason i didn't give this 5 stars was because it could have had more maps. But that is partially just laziness, because there is enough detail in there to draw your own map.

So far all of the Pen and Sword books i have purchased have been well written, and they are all printed in England.
