“An insightful and harrowing roller coaster ride through the career of one of rock and roll’s greatest guitarists. Strap yourself in.” (Slash)

“Rocking Joe Perry ‘rocks’ again!” (Jimmy Page)

“Joe Perry has been the AxeMeister longer than some of you have been alive. He’s been there, and done that. He has been the consummate six-string gunslinger for a band that has always done things their own way. Joe never went Hollywood. Joe never looked over his shoulder to see who was running behind him. Ever the gentleman rocker, Joe sits high atop of rock royalty. Admit it. You’re jealous. When I grow up, I want to be Joe Perry.”
(Gene Simmons)

“Joe Perry describes with amazing detail and passion the virtual odyssey of his life as the quintessential rock star in America’s most famous rock band of all time. Like his riffs, his story is inspired, crisp, and packs a punch. Joe Perry has done for rock and roll what the human genome project and stem cell technology have done for medicine—broken it wide open to inspire and shape our music for many decades to come. I could not stop reading this book!” (Rudolph Tanzi, professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and New York Times bestselling coauthor (with Deepak Chopra) of Super Brain)

"One might guess that I, Perry Farrell, would admire Joe Perry because he is a legendary guitar ripper, and you'd easily be right on the button—however, what you wouldn't have guessed is that I admire, respect, and have looked up to Joe Perry for years because he is a mad passionate, devoted husband and loving daddy who rocks. Viva familia Joe!" (Perry Farrell) -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

This book makes it quite clear how "lost" Joe must have been during his foggy years. As a GUITARPLAYER I would have preferred to get more guitar related topics covered, since Joe is stellar when it comes to gear, style and approach in music. We get more of a superficial account of his life which bar the addiction seems quite uneventful. But, you know that that is not true. They just neither spill the beans nor partake in gizmo speak. For fans only. I am not one.A book for the technically NON inclined. Guitar players beware.

Easy read about Joe Perry, husband, father and rocker 11. Oktober 2014

I was pleasantly surprised by what a decent read this was. Joe and his co writer give you the feeling of him telling you his stories in person. I think it is a nicely condensed history of his life and the life of the band. It's a straightforward read and Perry shoots straight.

I am a musician so I would have enjoyed much more detail on the writing, recording and playing. Not near enough info. There is a cool section at the end of the book about all his guitars and his backline set up.

He's pretty transparent about his love of his "brother" Steven, as well as the fact that he dislikes Tyler quite a bit, and will never trust him again. Tyler comes off as brilliant, a diva, intensely insecure and someone who will do whatever it takes to be more famous, event at the cost of hurting all close to him. Perry admits that he (Perry) was pretty arrogant and treated a lot of people badly. He also had his own version of a "Yoko" who was very disruptive to the band back in the 70's.

Perry spends plenty of time talking about his love for his family and wife, and it seems no doubt that his wife really helped him get straight.

My finale critique is that while Perry says his other band members are a huge part of his life, he shares absolutely zero information about them and his relationships with them? When you finish you haven't learned anything about them? That's a miss for me, particularly because the title is "My Life In and Out of Aerosmith

Let the music (and the words) do the talking 15. Oktober 2014

What is it about lead guitarists that lend towards such great autobiographies? As I type this review, I can't help but think of the book by another of rock's guitar legends: Slash. I also can't help but compare the trio of individual Aerosmith autobiographies (Steven Tyler's Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?, Joey Kramer's Hit Hard: A Story of Hitting Rock Bottom at the Top, and now Joe Perry's) to the trio that came from former GNR members (Slash, Duff McKagan's It's So Easy: and other lies, and Steven Adler's My Appetite for Destruction: Sex & Drugs & Guns N' Roses). Both Stevens leave autobiographies that give you a peek inside a mind that may be slightly deluded, as you never get a sense of individual responsibility. Both Duff and Joey offer something a bit different. With Joey's book you get less of an Aerosmith document, but more of a look into the psyche of personal demons and personal abuse (not quite so much of the chemical variety, though it's certainly there). Duff left more of a dry account that made you want more. Both Joe and Slash give the reader what they're really after: real tales of the highs, lows, and all the good and bad details of the rock world.

Joe Perry has definitely lived it all, and he presents his story in such a compelling fashion. If you have read Walk This Way: The Autobiography of Aerosmith, you may think you know all the details, but Rocks gives even more details to some of the strife that Walk This Way only hinted at. For example, Rocks offers a much more thorough account of the drama that contributed to the rise and fall of the Tim Collins era. You get a better sense of the mentorship that Frank Connelly offered. And of course Joe picks up nicely where other books left off to give his account of the Aerosmith drama through the 2000s. Through all of this, you get a sense of the incredible brotherhood that is Aerosmith, as well as the legend of Joe Perry, all with a sense of sincerity and humility.

Finally, as a guitarist myself, I greatly enjoyed the final portion of the book that allows Joe's road crew through the years talk about the evolution of Joe's gear. Anyone hoping to get the most out of guitar tone and anyone who loves guitar-porn will be salivating at this portion.

For the Joe Perry and Aerosmith fan, I cannot recommend this book enough!

A Book Any Aerosmith Fan Will Enjoy 8. Oktober 2014
Von Adam Silvia - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
"Rocks" was a very entertaining read about the life and rock path of Joe Perry. Any Aerosmith fan can enjoy this book, and will not be disappointed with it. "Rocks" has everything you expect from a tale about a rock legend that includes sex, drugs, and of course some good old fashion rock n' roll. I enjoyed it, and I'm sure any other fan would too. As an added bonus there are photos throughout the book with explanations attached to each of them.

"Walk This Way” 7. Oktober 2014
Von Wulfstan - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
This is a must-read for fans of Aerosmith or "tell-all" autobios by rock stars. Joe Perry has done it all, seen it all, and here- shared it all. Over forty years of rock experiences are detailed here, including the rise & fall (and rise again) of Aerosmith.

Of course this book also details the "Joe Perry Project" years, too. I covers his early life, his devotion to his wife Billie (her picture is on his guitar!). Of course there is plenty of "sex drugs and rock & roll".

Entertaining rock bio, readable. Even if you're not in the "Blue Army", you'll want to "Walk This Way”!

Rock & Roll Rashomon: Perry vs. Tyler Part 2 13. November 2014

Joe Perry has always been the seemingly quieter side of the Toxic Twins. If you've read Steven Tyler's autobiography, this book will serve as a fitting companion. Everything from Perry's writing style to his interpretation of events highlights the sharp contrast between the two men, who retain a combustive, combative and yet brotherly relationship.

Joe Perry's book - no doubt aided by bestselling biographer David Ritz - is enjoyable and readable. While intoxicated and drugged during the '70s, the overall calm and determined focus of Perry helps to convey the story of Aerosmith in a clear business like way. Tyler's biography was way more colourful, impulsive, stream-of-consciousness and anecdotal. Perry focuses on his personal decisions (shedding light where Tyler did not) in leaving the band; his ongoing frustrations and his inner life.

Without saying, Perry really is the backbone of Aerosmith while Steven is the consummate frontman, and the two play out their roles in Perry's story. So while Tyler's voice shouts louder and is more sensory - Perry's tale is one of a geek who became a guitar god. It's fascinating to hear both men speak, even if one wonders how accurate events were. Whatever the case, Perry's love of music triumphs above the chaos. And for Aerosmith, one of the most remarkable rock and roll bands in history - the Train Keeps A Rollin'...
