Neither is The World's Most Dangerous Places meant to be used as a guidebook. True, there will be some adrenaline junkies out there who, upon perusing the pages about the war in Chechnya, decide that that's the place they want to be. The people most likely to benefit from this book, however, are those who either have to visit the perilous corners of the world--journalists, foreign-service employees, etc.--or those who have a desire to learn more about such places without necessarily visiting them. It's also a good compliment to more mainstream guidebooks for the growing legion of adventure travelers whose quests for higher mountains to climb, fiercer rivers to raft, and wilder trails to hike often take them to hazardous regions. Whether you're planning a trip to a dangerous place or you just want to learn more about one, The World's Most Dangerous Places is the right book at the right time. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.
Robert Young Pelton, a professional adventurer, and his team of international war correspondents have updated this indispensable handbook for the intrepid adventurer a "howto" in getting in and out of the world's hot spots.
We are living in a dangerous world, and now more than ever people want to know what is going on where (and why). Featuring 25 countries, The World's Most Dangerous Places, 5th Edition offers a brief uptotheminute history of each nation, provides tips on how to get in, out and around safely, and uncovers their dangers, from diseases, land mines, and kidnapping to mercenaries and militias. Completely revised, this edition has a number of countries who have been added to the hot list.
With firsthand accounts of breathtaking adventure in each country, the book also provides the latest indispensable information on contacts for nongovernmental and rescue organizations, environmental groups, political activists, training schools in outdoor survival, commando techniques, and other potentially lifesaving advice.

Pelton can help you. He and his colleagues show every sign of actually going to most of these places, or of interviewing people who did. In the sort of laconic, matter-of-fact style you'd expect of a seasoned mercenary, Pelton tells you what you'd need to know to either survive the trip or (more likely) sensibly decide to go somewhere else.:)
What's really attractive about this book, which is roughly the size and shape and thickness of an almanac, is the absolute wealth of information in it. Scores of links to websites. Chapters on countries, including historical and cultural notes. Chapters on crime categories. Stuff on diseases. Tables comparing countries in certain categories (air fatalities, for example). Arguably it should be in the reference section although it's pretty hard to defend moving it out of the travel section. In any event, it makes a wonderful companion to an almanac as a way of learning more about the rest of the world. Refreshingly, the United States (Pelton is Canadian) gets listed and its hazards considered just like any other country.
Recommended either as travel information or as a reference on world cultures.
In addition to the adventure, this book contains useful information on how to make crooks less likely to target you while abroad, and how to handle yourself if they do. It also contains information on how to handle yourself if you're ever in a dangerous place or situation.
This book contains information you will never see on the news, or learn about in school. It is definitely worth it!
