Amazon.com

The World's Most Dangerous Places is not a comforting book; its pages bristle with tales of land mines, war zones, terrorists, mercenaries, mafiosi, massacres, kidnappers, drug smugglers, and all the other travel disasters that are the stuff of nightmares. But then, as the editors point out in their foreword, "as travelers are kidnapped and executed in Cambodia, a recognized dangerous place, they also are hunted down and murdered in Los Angeles." In other words, the most dangerous place in the world is more of a state of mind: ignorance.

Neither is The World's Most Dangerous Places meant to be used as a guidebook. True, there will be some adrenaline junkies out there who, upon perusing the pages about the war in Chechnya, decide that that's the place they want to be. The people most likely to benefit from this book, however, are those who either have to visit the perilous corners of the world--journalists, foreign-service employees, etc.--or those who have a desire to learn more about such places without necessarily visiting them. It's also a good compliment to more mainstream guidebooks for the growing legion of adventure travelers whose quests for higher mountains to climb, fiercer rivers to raft, and wilder trails to hike often take them to hazardous regions. Whether you're planning a trip to a dangerous place or you just want to learn more about one, The World's Most Dangerous Places is the right book at the right time. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Kurzbeschreibung

Robert Young Pelton, a professional adventurer, and his team of international war correspondents have updated this indispensable handbook for the intrepid adventurer–– a "how–to" in getting in and out of the world's hot spots.

We are living in a dangerous world, and now more than ever people want to know what is going on where (and why). Featuring 25 countries, The World's Most Dangerous Places, 5th Edition offers a brief up–to–the–minute history of each nation, provides tips on how to get in, out and around safely, and uncovers their dangers, from diseases, land mines, and kidnapping to mercenaries and militias. Completely revised, this edition has a number of countries who have been added to the hot list.

With firsthand accounts of breathtaking adventure in each country, the book also provides the latest indispensable information on contacts for nongovernmental and rescue organizations, environmental groups, political activists, training schools in outdoor survival, commando techniques, and other potentially life–saving advice.

Thinking of going to someplace dangerous? Not sure if it's dangerous or not? Not even considering it, but want to read up anyway?

Pelton can help you. He and his colleagues show every sign of actually going to most of these places, or of interviewing people who did. In the sort of laconic, matter-of-fact style you'd expect of a seasoned mercenary, Pelton tells you what you'd need to know to either survive the trip or (more likely) sensibly decide to go somewhere else.:)

What's really attractive about this book, which is roughly the size and shape and thickness of an almanac, is the absolute wealth of information in it. Scores of links to websites. Chapters on countries, including historical and cultural notes. Chapters on crime categories. Stuff on diseases. Tables comparing countries in certain categories (air fatalities, for example). Arguably it should be in the reference section although it's pretty hard to defend moving it out of the travel section. In any event, it makes a wonderful companion to an almanac as a way of learning more about the rest of the world. Refreshingly, the United States (Pelton is Canadian) gets listed and its hazards considered just like any other country.

Recommended either as travel information or as a reference on world cultures.

Essential Guide to the world's rough spots with all necessary information you will need for all your travels that go beyond hanging out on the beach and riding a bus to see some monument or other. Also a great source of background information on conflicts and their causes, the major players and interests and so on... Some problems though: There is the tendency to repeat information given 2 paragraphs above, and then again and again. Also, if you are familiar with RYP's other works (well worth a read), you will notice that some passages seem to have been lifted straight from another book's manuscript and incorporated into this one(or the other way around...). Some statistical data appears downright contradictory to other information in the same chapter, and a proofreader DEFINITELY wouldn't hurt. RYP, if you're reading this, I'll do it for a free copy and some DP gear, OK? Buy it now, you'll never regret it!

Rarely has there been a more personal, in-depth account of what it is like in the forbidden zones of the world. The things the author saw and heard are truely eye-openers, and I read spellbound. He tells it like it is, as he saw it, without discoloration by politics and opinion.

In addition to the adventure, this book contains useful information on how to make crooks less likely to target you while abroad, and how to handle yourself if they do. It also contains information on how to handle yourself if you're ever in a dangerous place or situation.

This book contains information you will never see on the news, or learn about in school. It is definitely worth it!

DP4 Bigger and Badder (and fewer typos) than DP3.
My first exposer to the DP series was an appearence RYP made on a late night talk show. I instantly knew I'd like the book when Pelton started talking about the best way to see a... Lesen Sie weiter...

Pelton's book is inaccurate and possibly racist
