Richard Dawkins hat eine Mission! Er erklärt Charles Darwins Evolutionslehre in einfachen Worten, so dass sie auch für ein Laienpublikum verständlich wird. Gleichzeitig kritisiert er die simplen Erklärungsmodelle der Weltreligionen und deren gefährlichen Auswirkungen auf die Anhänger dieser Ideologien.
In seinem 1995 erschienenden Buch "River out of Eden" beantwortet Dawkins, auch "Darwins Rottweiler" genannt, die Frage, die uns Menschen seit Jahrtausenden umtreibt: Was ist der Sinn des Lebens? Seine Antwort: "the true utility function of life, that which is being maximized in the natural world, is DNA survival" (123).
In seinem Klassiker Selfish Gene von 1976 argumentierte Dawkins, dass alle Lebewesen nur die "survival machines" für Gene sind, die nur daran interessiert sind sich zu vermehren. Aus diesem Konzept lässt sich, so Dawkins, die von vielen Menschen oft wahrgenommene Grausamkeit und Sinnlosigkeit unserer Existenz erklären: "In a universe of blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference [...]. DNA neither cares nor knows. DNA just is. And we dance to its music" (155).
Dieser kurze Abschnitt verdeutlicht auch ein weiteres Markenzeichen von Dawkins. Er schreibt über Wissenschaft in einer geradezu zärtlichen und poetischen Sprache. Wir Menschen; die Tänzer zur Musik der DNA. Herrlich!
Fazit: Dawkins in Hochform. Er ist einer der wortgewaltigsten Intellektuellen unserer Zeit. Im Kampf gegen Kreationismus und Intelligent Design bleibt er die Speerspitze der Wissenschaft!

A book essentially dealing with genes (a favourite subject of the author) and how scientists can use DNA 'fingerprinting' to delve deeper and deeper into the past to discover life's origins and branching points.
It dispels some myths & misconceptions about how evolution works and also raises some rather novel issues (I thought) about heredity - took me a bit of time to get my head round the argument here!
Although I found this book enlightening (as all Mr Dawkins' books are), I found myself a tad overwhelmed by the economics brought in to play to explain the apparent inconsistencies in populations of male & female in certain species, and also I found the discourse on bees a little more laboured than usual.
Nonetheless, a very thought-provoking and interesting read for those who wish to know more about life, the universe & everything (42).

Reading the other customer comments you can see that this book will upset many readers of 'strong faith.' In addition, there are a few that say material in this book has been written by Dawkins elsewhere before.
Well, this is the first book of his I have read, and I found it to be provocative and very interesting. He tends to put down those who believe in 'something larger' besides the theory of evolution, which wasn't really necessary except to bring out loud counterarguments in the reviews from those folks.
The best parts of the book were the clear, logical, and interesting examples of natural selection. It has been said that gaining new perspective is one of the most powerful things you can learn. This book will definitely give you a new perspective on the world around you, and will be a short and interesting read in the process. Enjoy.

Nothing new
If you've read 'The Blind Watchmaker' you've also read this book. The whole book reads like a new frontend to Dawkin's standard argument. There is nothing substantial new here.

An excellent popularization of Darwinism
