Kurzbeschreibung

Madoc and Fallon. Two estranged teenagers playing games that push the boundaries between love and war . . .

She's back.

For the three years she's been away at boarding school, there was no word from her. Back when we lived in the same house, she used to cut me down during the day and then leave her door open for me at night.

I was stupid then, but now I'm ready to beat her at her own game . . .

I'm back.

Three years and I can tell he still wants me, even if he acts like he's better than me.

But I won't be scared away. Or pushed down. I'll call his bluff and fight back. That's what he wants, right? As long as I keep my guard up, he'll never know how much he affects me . . .

5.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome!!! 7. September 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I had high expectations after Penelope Douglas's debut Bully, and I must say she did what I expected; she rocked! Rival is different, but nevertheless awesome in its on way. New Adult is a tricky genre, and I'm often disappointed because some sequels tend to be to similar to the first book, but Rival isn't and that's what makes Penelope Douglas a great author.
Madoc and Fallon are unique characters with their own lives, their own failures, and problems. The characters are three dimensional and absolutely awesome. For those of you who can't get enough of Jared and Tate be sure that you'll get to meet them in Rival again. I was a bit surprised that some people complained about Rival, because I certainly have nothing to complain about.
With this book it's; read it, love it, and remember it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen MADOC!!!! 26. August 2014

5+ Madoc Effing Caruthers STARS!!!

First of all, I owe Penelope a huge THANK YOU for giving me an ARC of this wonderful little gem.

HOLY. SHIT. Penelope has done it again! And let me just say, Pen, I freaking LOVE your mind. Rival was fantastic! Seriously could not put this book down. It's a definite cover-to-cover read.

I absolutely adored Bully and Until You but I think Rival wins it for me (at least until Falling Away.) ;) I love Jared and Tate but I feel like Madoc and Fallon were so much more HOT together. Dare I say it, I think I may even love Madoc more than Jared. Who would have thought?! I never go for the blondes! Get ready to swoon ladies. That boy is just so sexy, It's impossible not to fall for him.

Madoc and Fallon threw me around like a damn rag doll and I'm pretty sure I got whiplash. I could not keep up with their feelings for each other. The back and forth banter between them was freaking hilarious. You'd think they were fighting but then they'd just want to rip each others clothes off. They wanted each other but yet they wanted to hate each other. I loved it!

The sex scenes, oh the sex scenes. Pen writes sex scenes, and Pen writes sex scenes well. Reeeeally well. I want to fan myself just thinking about them. Holy crap, they were hot! Where can I find my own Madoc?!

And now... I am DYING for Jax. January is way too far away.

3.0 von 5 Sternen It was a little bit OTT. 26. August 2014
Von The HEA Junkie - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Well, I wanted to love this one so much and I wish I could give this 5 stars.Suffice it to say, this book was a bit uneven for me. There were parts that I liked but there were parts that I wasn't really crazy about. I won't enumerate all of them because they are massive spoilers so I'll just focus on the major things that I didn't like.

Madoc and Fallon are step siblings and two years ago something happened between them but unfortunately, it ended very badly. But now Fallon is back and Madoc doesn't quite know what to do with the whole situation. There were a lot of misunderstandings, feelings of betrayal and the desire to seek revenge.

What worked for me.

The writing. Penelope Douglas can write. No question about it. She takes this really compelling and sometimes difficult characters and make you fall in love with them. That's what she did with Madoc. You all remembered Madoc, right? I cheered Tate on when she finally junk punched the guy. He was the classic arrogant douchecanoe but at the end of Bully, I wanted his story so bad. We finally got a glimpse of it during Until You. And I was excited to read his story because of forbidden quality to it.

The sex scenes were pretty darn hot. If you think Bully and Until You were hot, this book surpassed both of them in the steam department. And I got to tell you, for readers who are looking for some serious steam in their book, read this book.

I liked Madoc and Fallon. I liked them together, for the most part. They're opposites in so many ways yet they have enough in common to make their relationship believable. When they're not at each other's throats, I enjoyed their interaction very much.

What didn't work...

The overall plot. For one, it felt like a rehash of Jared and Tate's "I-hate-you-but-I-love-you" story line. I thought the forbidden aspect would be the main thing that holds the whole story together. There were echoes of it, for sure but they are just that, echoes. The reason why it left me unsatisfied was when the book started, the forbidden part already happened. That moment where they started their relationship happened off screen. Most of the book was just dealing with the aftermath of their forbidden relationship. I was expecting to see more of it, instead we get Fallon and Madoc hating each other the the first half of the book.

Another thing that didn't work for me are the major plot devices--yup, devices used in this book. There were, oh, I don't know, three major ones not to mention the many side plots running along the three main ones. You name it, this book pretty much have it: Big misunderstanding, blackmail, big secrets, etc. It ended up trite and a little bit all over the place for me. There were too many things happening that Madoc and Fallon's character development sort of got lost in the shuffle. One less plot device or one less side plot, this would have ended up great. I'm sorry but the story just didn't really come together for me. It felt too cluttered and too heavy-handed for my taste.

Overall, I wasn't wowed but it still a decent read for me. And if you loved Bully and Until You, I'd still definitely recommend this one.

2.7 to 3 stars!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Swooning for Madoc 26. August 2014
Von C. Halford - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Originally given 4.5 hearts at Rookie Romance.

Oh, I loved it. Love, love, loved it! I'm definitely a fan of Penelope Douglas' books and these characters.

I loved Fallon. She's feisty and seems completely fearless. She's so strong, but some of that strength came at a rather terrible price. She definitely has walls erected that she tries to use to keep Madoc out of her heart, but she has a particular weakness for Madoc that means that those walls crumble helplessly around him.
Madoc was also pretty darn amazing. I liked him in Bully and Until You, but I loved him in Rival. We get to see the real Madoc and not just the fun loving guy he presents to the world. He has such a wonderful, mischievous sense of humour which I think suits Fallon to a T and softens her a bit. I loved seeing this other side to him and seeing that he is surprisingly sensitive and haunted by Fallon's sudden disappearance when they were 16.

I adored Madoc and Fallon's love-hate relationship. It's often contentious and filled with tension- mostly sexual tension! At the beginning, upon Fallon's return, there are misunderstandings aplenty and both Madoc and Fallon have different sides of their story. I loved seeing their past slowly revealed from both sides until we get a full understanding of just what happened between them when they were 16. It broke my heart sometimes, and there's plenty of angst to go around in their story.

It was so brilliant to revisit with previous characters in the series as well. Tate and Jared are still as argumentative and passionate as ever. I loved seeing Jax as well, he's certainly grown up a lot. I am very excited to read his book, especially with K.C. as his leading lady! Penelope Douglas definitely has a way of capturing the reader and immersing them in an intense and heartfelt story.

Now....is it January yet? Because I really, really want to read Falling Away!!

*I received a review copy from the publisher, for my honest opinion. Thank you!

I'm such a fan of this series that when I found out Books A Million put out their paperbacks of it early, I drove 45 minutes to go get it. I've been waiting for ages, it seems but it was worth it! I love Fallon and Madoc! I loved that, when I read about Fallon and Madoc, it felt totally different from Tate and Jared but in a good way. Many authors write romances about different couples but it still feels vaguely the same. This one didn't. I still love Jared and Tate and I was glad to glimpse them in this. And I literally can't wait for Jax's book! The glimpses of him that we caught in this book were tantalizing. Penelope Douglas excels at writing sexual tension. I highly recommend all of the Fall Away books!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Such an AMAZING read! 26. August 2014

Rival is filled with characters that are flawed, real, and completely lovable. This is a fantastic read that is sure to stay with you long after you've put the book down, and I’m happy to say that Penelope Douglas has most certainly grown as an Author. This is by far her best book yet!

Madoc and Fallon may have been step siblings, but they shared a love/hate relationship that crossed the lines on more than one occasion. When she’s unexpectedly shipped off to boarding school, she’s both bitter and resentful. Now, two years later, she’s back and is looking for revenge.

I absolutely adored Fallon. I mean, I have a serious girl crush on her. She’s feisty, full of spunk, and is able to hold her own against Madoc who is the king of quips. She had been through things that would completely shatter most people, but instead, she came out that much stronger. I loved her will. Her fight. Her drive. Hell … I loved everything about her.

Madoc stole my heart in Bully with his loyalty to Jared and the way he spoke without a filter. I never knew what to expect with him and it kept me on my toes. In this story we get to see what made Madoc the way that he is. Why he took on that playboy persona. He harbored a lot of hurt and dealt with it the only way that he knew how. He definitely has a way with words and there’s a part in this story where his words to Fallon actually rival Tate’s speech in Bully. It was that GOOD. That heartfelt. That sweet. I seriously swooned over it and Madoc officially has my heart now. I’m so sorry Jared, but I hope you understand.

Speaking of Jared, I did thoroughly enjoy getting to see more of his and Tate’s relationship throughout the novel. Their friendship and the love that they share is so genuine that I don’t think I’ll ever grow tired of it. You’ll also get to see Jax’s integration into the group of friends and let me tell you, he definitely has a lot of traits that his brother Jared has, but holly hell. This guy is smart. I mean really smart. I am dying to get my hands on Falling Away as I’m going to need another Jax fix quick (try saying that one three times fast)!

Rival is certainly an emotional roller coaster that will leave you breathless. You’ll smile, laugh out loud, and there are parts that will make you want to shed a tear or two. I was so drawn into the world that Penelope created that I didn't want to put the book down for even a second.

On a scale of 1 – 5, I’d have to give Rival 10 stars. I’m sorry, but it’s true. I was left with such a book hangover after I finished reading this that I found it extremely difficult to get into any other book. And it remained that way for weeks. WEEKS. Not days. I highly recommend picking this book up now rather than later. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
