The latest episode (following last year's Endymion) of Simmons' Foundation-like saga of the far future tells of the struggle for dominance between humanity and its siblings, one of which is a highly evolved race with artificial intelligence and another of which has experimented upon its own DNA until it is no longer quite human. What might be called classical humankind is under the rule of a newly established, dominant Catholic Church, which undertakes to exterminate one of its rivals, the Ousters, and also seeks the girl Aenea, part-human and part-machine and a messiah for whom the adventurer Endymion is guardian. But Endymion and Aenea part as their destinies begin to fulfill themselves, and before they meet again, Endymion leaps through time portals from world to world. These worlds, including a gas giant with jellyfishlike lifeforms in its upper atmosphere and an ice kingdom carved among mountain peaks, are brilliantly realized. I cannot understand, how one can separate the Hyperion volumes from the Endymion saga and judge them separately. They fit beautifully into an adventure with a breadth of scope almost unmatched in my opinion. What cought me is the fact, that Simmons never patronizes the reader with explanatory detail yet does not forget to make loose ends of the plot meet, so that the careful reader is never lost.
I also liked the way, techology is woven intothe plot as a "natural" part of this universe. The overprestigious concentration on "SciFi" technology in other SF stories too often squeezes aside, what truly matters: How believable people behave, react, change and love - the juice of any good story.
I am looking forward rereading all 4 books again.

First off, I want to say that I don't believe love is a tangible force in the universe. I also found both Aenea's omniscience and Raul's thick-headedness maddening at times. Finally, some of the inconsistencies were distracting.
Having said that, The Rise of Endymion is the most emotionally fulfilling science fiction novel I have ever read. The entire Hyperion saga is a case study in empathy. I found parts of it difficult to read simply because I was aching for the characters -- I'd been there and I knew their agony. Like its sister novels, The Rise of Endymion is not about happy endings; it is about strong, passionate people who persevere in the face of devastating loss. That's life. I have never come close to weeping over any novel, but at the end of this one, there were tears in my eyes. I didn't feel they were jerked from me, either, because none of these characters begged for sympathy. In my mind, they earned it.

I know some others say that the book is overdone in its emotionality, but for me, that didn't make me feel any less of what Simmons was trying to communicate. DS's concept of the Ouster civilization is similar in style to the Edenists in Peter F. Hamilton's "Reality Dysfunction" series. Maybe I was just lonely at the particular time I was reading The Rise of Endymion, but I really began to care about the characters and to get into Simmons' universe, so the ending was especially tragic and heartbreaking to one who can become as involved in what they read as myself. This is far from typical, though. Most authors try to make you care about their characters with limited success, but I can say without a doubt that DS won the battle for my heart and mind with The Rise of Endymion.

On an absolute scale, the book is good
