"Rilla of Ingleside" is the last novel in the famous Anne-series. The novel is about Anne's youngest daughter Rilla and it differs very much from the previous volumes: first of all, Anne is not the main character - most of the action you see throug Rilla's eyes.
Although the novel takes place in beautiful PEI the atmosphere is not as sweet as in the former stories: The First World War begins and the Blythe familiy is involved like hundred thousands other Canadian families. Jem, Walter and Shirley leave Canada for war. The girls and Anne and Gilbert stay and their hearts are broken. During the four years of war the fourteen year old Rilla, spoiled and pretty vain, changes - life is not shallow and golden any more, but bitter and heartbreaking.
"Rilla" is an exciting and sentimental book - a pageturner. You really want to know what will happen next, if the brothers return and so on. Unfortunaly - sometimes the Blythe familiy is a too perfect to be true (and a little bit arrogant, I think). They are perfect patriots and take all challenges brave and high-headed. That is why I can't give five stars. But nevertheless there is still some ironic passages and these I love most: Rilla who has to beg pardon (even she hates the stupid and mean person) and she lispes when Ken, her Sir Galahad asks her to marry. This reminds me of my sweet old Anne of Green Gables, her clumsiness and her humour and her spirit!

Since Anne what not as much of a main character in this book, I was surprised by how much I liked it. I didn't think I would because she was not in it. However, I now think, that it is one of the best books in the series.( Since I can't choose just one book, thats the highest compliment I can give.) In the beginning Rilla a frivolous, nonambitious girl who only wants the most fun life can give her. She knows nothing of the sorrows or horrors of life, beyond her worries of who she'll dance with...This book tells the story of Rilla's life during the horrrible, "war to end all wars". During this time, faced with pain, sorrow, and duty she proves herself as a true woman and worthy of her handsome Kenneth Ford.

I love L.M. Montgomery's books, and I think my favorite is Rilla of Ingleside. I read it when I was in fourth grade, and even after three years, it's still great. Rilla Blythe, the protagonist, is someone I can really relate to, since she's a teenager. This book is a story basically about this family, the Blythe family, that's torn apart because of the World War One. It's really a great story, both cheerful and heartbreaking at the same time. I'm sure I've cried a lot when I read it for the first time. Also, it's not only a story about Rilla. Montgomery crafts a superb tale around all the characters in this book: she writes about all their feelings, doings, etc. This book rocks.
