This book is NOT an autobiography,
Von Kurt (New Brunswick, NJ) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
Rezension bezieht sich auf: I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala (Taschenbuch)
Many of those who criticize Ms. Menchu's work subscribe to the fallacy that "I, Rigoberta Menchu" is an autobiography. After David Stoll published "Rigoberta Menchu and the Story of All Poor Guatemalans," Ms. Menchu responded, "'Yo, Rigoberta Menchu' no fue una autobiografia, sino un testimonio." ("'I, Rigoberta Menchu was not an autobiography, but rather a testimony.") Marc Zimmerman, an expert on Guatemalan resistance literature, has stated that testimonial literature implicitly contains the possibility of "other voices." In essence, Ms. Menchu aimed to speak for her community rather than herself. The idea of the collective voice is a well-known characteristic of Mayan culture. There is also a level of common sense that eludes many of Ms. Menchu's critics. Assuming that the book is an autobiography, does it really matter that one of Ms. Menchu's brothers was actually shot by the army instead of burnt alive. This hairsplitting does not conceal the fact that the Guatemalan military committed such atrocities in the death of over 200,000 Guatemalans and the destruction of over 400 villages. "I, Rigoberta Menchu" played a pivotal role in bringing international attention to the plight of Guatemala, which, as Stoll himself acknowledges, few other people could have done. The real question raised by Stoll's book is not who died where and how, but does Rigoberta Menchu truly represent "all poor Guatemalans." To understand Guatemalan history in the early 1980s, I recommend Jennifer Schirmer's "The Guatemalan Military Project: A Violence Called Democracy" and Stoll's more persuasive work, "Between Two Armies in the Ixil Towns of Guatemala." "I, Rigoberta Menchu" has its faults but it is a superb introduction to the debate over recent Guatemalan history.

One-sided,
Von B W (queretaro, mexico) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
Rezension bezieht sich auf: I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala (Taschenbuch)
this was a very good book, if not very disturbing. i'm told that the author (Menchú) was told to give a very one-sided black and white account. even that being the case, this book is about 10 times more tragic than any nazi movie or book you'll read. and the worst part about it is this was going on and still is to some degree, in the US' backyard and we refused to do anything about it. i challenge anyone to read this book and not get involved with the indigineous struggle in Guatémala.

A good primary source document on Mayan culture,
Rezension bezieht sich auf: I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala (Taschenbuch)
To completely dismiss this book as garbage merely on the grounds that not everything is true is a bit foolish. Few people telling their own stories tell a complete truth. For those who seek to read a good account of how counter-insurgency forces decimated villages, I recommend Victor Montejo's book Testimony: Death of a Guatelmalan Village. Back to Menchu's story --I am fully aware that David Stoll has written a book which exposes several "lies" by Menchu. However, I still contend that this book is of immense historical and anthropological value. Few books give us such description of the Mayan lifestyle (though the Mayan lifestyle is not a homogenous one as their fallen empire is one of many different ethnicities). This book provides us with good examples of duality between Christianity and Mayan traditions, the racial hierarchy present in Guatemala (also present in other Hispano-american nations), and indigenous myths associated with the presence of the white man. (Notably that medicines introduced from whites have been less effective than the formerly used herbs and roots, etc. Menchu also made a reference that she'd heard elders say snakes did not bite the indians prior to the arrival of the whites.) We also may consider that the "immediate family" in indigenous groups may not be as immediate as we westerners are accustomed to.
