Kurzbeschreibung

International management guru, Fons Trompenaar's best-selling Riding the Waves of Culture has become an essential guide for managers and trainers in multinational organizations, as well as anyone who conducts business overseas. This thoroughly revised, second edition, updated to include new case histories and fresh research findings, uses country-by-country graphs, examples, and other comparisons to clearly illustrate how different cultures respond to different management approaches; provides case histories to show how managers have successfully anticipated and mediated difficult and potentially costly dilemmas; and shows how managers can prepare their organizations for the process of internationalization through specific points of intervention.

Synopsis

An international manager has a tough job, coping with three different cultures: the culture of origin, the culture in which he or she is working and the culture of the organization. Fons Trompenaars has been studying the effects of culture on management for many years, and he profoundly disagrees with the widely held theory that internationalization will create a common, worldwide culture. In this book, he claims that there is not, and can never be "one best way of managing and organizing", regardless of where the company is located. This study provides cultural insights into the global versus local dilemma, and most importantly, gives readers a better understanding of their own culture and cultural differences in general. Containing case histories and anecdotes, the book is based on the author's own experience, plus field studies in 30 companies in a total of 50 countries, including Royal Dutch Airlines, KLM, Volvo, Lotus, Kodak, AT&T, Royal Dutch Shell, ICI, Heineken, Mars and Glaxo. Fons Trompenaars runs 900 cross-cultural programmes in 18 countries. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

5.0 von 5 Sternen a great introduction to the intricacy of dealing with different cultures, 3. Oktober 2007
As a trainer for intercultural management and communication this book is one of the "standards" to have on the shelf. Following the cultural dimensions approach - by trying to pick the core values of each society via a quantitative survey - the authors do a good job of explaining and comparing some 70 cultures on seven basic dimensions. An ultimative plus of the book, is that the authors clearly show how they came up with their rankings and scores by listing the single situations they constructed in the textbook. I have used some of them - preferrably the most controversial ones - in various trainings and they always triggered great discussions.

Another plus, is the easy-to-follow and no-frills way the book is written. Clearly a good introduction to culture and business conduct in large variety of countries. It helps people who move in different cultural environments to get some orientation, e.g. have you ever wondered why the French seem to be never on time and Americans are often perceived as "superficial" by some nations? This book will help you to gain an understanding of some deeply ingrained patterns which form the basis of culturally programmed behavior of which we are often not aware at all.

I'd rank it as a good introduction to the topic. However, research on cultural dimensions naturally has its limits, especially when it comes to bilateral comparisons. For a more in-depth understanding I'd recommand delving into the culture standard approach.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A very informative and insightful book, 21. September 1998

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Riding the Waves of Culture: Understanding Diversity in Global Business 2/E: 2nd Edition: Understanding Cultural Diversity in Global Business (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Having read a number of books on intercultural management, I can only say that in my opinion, "Riding the Waves of Culture" is by far the best book on this subject. Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner present the results of their research on cultural differences in a most engaging way. Their book is a quick read that is full of wonderful anecdotes about cross-cultural business dilemmas. The stories are presented in a way that demonstrates great awareness of and respect for very diverse approaches to business. The authors also offer a methodology for reconciling value differences that incorporates the best of both worlds.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A very interesting and informative book!, 20. August 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Riding the Waves of Culture: Understanding Diversity in Global Business 2/E: 2nd Edition: Understanding Cultural Diversity in Global Business (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Students of the International Business Studies Program at the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf in Germany have read this book and made the following comments:

--Riding the Waves of Culture is a very interesting and informative book with lots of examples and anecdotes. Trompenaars does not intend to give a universal answer or formula on how to do business with a different culture, but he sensitizes the reader to the fact that there are a lot of differences between cultures and that it is very important to be well informed and well prepared before doing business with people from other parts of the world.

--This is an interesting work with well-chosen comparisons between different cultures illustrated by examples and opinion polls. It is sometimes a bit wordy, but in general it represents a good attempt to understand people's behavior worldwide.

--Trompenaars has introduced us to the wonderful world of culture. Reading Riding the Waves of Culture, we can see the importance of knowing as much as possible about cultural differences. The author gives us a good idea of this topic.

--In my opinion, this book shows cultural differences very well and so can explain the problems arising between cultures. It also might help the reader to cope better with such problems. I agree with Trompenaars that it is sometimes important just to realize that there are differences. (Dies ist eine Amazon.de an der Uni-Studentenrezension.)
