Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Rick Steves has spent 100 days every year since 1973 exploring Europe. Rick produces a public television series (Rick Steves' Europe), a public radio show (Travel with Rick Steves), and an app and podcast (Rick Steves Audio Europe); writes a bestselling series of guidebooks and a nationally syndicated newspaper column; organizes guided tours that take thousands of travelers to Europe annually; and offers an information-packed website (RickSteves.com). With the help of his hardworking staff of 80 at Europe Through the Back Door—in Edmonds, Washington, just north of Seattle—Rick's mission is to make European travel fun, affordable, and culturally broadening for Americans.

Gene Openshaw is a writer, composer, tour guide, and lecturer on art and history. Specializing in writing walking tours of Europe's cultural sights, Gene has coauthored 10 of Rick's books and contributes to Rick's public television series. As a composer, Gene has written a full-length opera (Matter), a violin sonata, and dozens of songs. He lives near Seattle with his daughter, and roots for the Mariners in good times and bad.

Very helpful, but not necessary if you buy Rick Steves' Italy 9. Mai 2014
Von K. Adler - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
There is a lot of helpful infomation in this book. It breaks down Tuscany into smaller regions and gives you insider tips. It made me so excited for my upcoming trip. It gives you a better sense of Florence and places to visit or skip in the region. But then I bought the Rick Steves' Italy book. The sections on Tuscany in that book are almost identical to what is written here. You do not need to get both books.

Don't leave home without it - if you're going to Florence 6. März 2014
Von Lorenzo 73 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
We used previous editions on two trips to Florence. We followed its advice on places to eat and the very nice place we stayed at. We have not been disappointed. The maps are excellent. Guides to the museums, Uffizi, Academia, Bargello, etc. are accurate and helpful, likewise walking tours. General info on traveling in and around Florence, getting cash, making calls, tipping, weather, etc. are also useful. It has what you need. I have looked at other guides for Florence and they are just not as good. I hope to return to Florence this fall. I will take the guidebook with me.

There were a couple of places that have really great Renaissance frescos that were not mentioned. These are Chiesa di Santa Trinita and Chiesa di San Salvatore a Ognisanti. Now you know.

Lots of useful information 28. Januar 2014

This book was indispensable during a recent trip to Florence and Pisa. It was great to have a "go-to" source for historical information and guidance on the "can't miss" locations. When our train from Pisa to Florence was cancelled, we were able to catch a cab to the airport in Pisa and take the bus to Florence thanks to the information provided in the guide. We visited both cities in January 2014 and were fortunate in mild weather (mid 50s) and sparse crowds. Those visiting during the peak season will find many hints and tips for making the most of your vacation.

The best way to head to the museums and churches 30. Oktober 2013
Von MaryO - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Rick's guidebooks point me to the most important museums and churches and the most important works of art they contain. Other guidebooks do that as well. Where Rick's books excel is in providing perspective and analysis that explains WHY the selected works are so important. Without this help, the museums and churches are so full of art good and bad that a visit makes the eyes glaze over. On this trip, I also had the Michelin Green Guide and a Top Ten, and Rick was the best.
Once again, Rick's recommendations led me to lodging (Il Villini) that was perfect for my taste and budget. His recommendations tend to be smaller hotels and inns, so try to book far in advance.
In addition to being the best sources I've found for sights and lodging, Rick's guides regularly provide almost all the information I need on transit, hours, etc. For food, I try to find a local app (this time "Eat Florence").

We'd use again, but only for logistics 28. Juni 2014
Von Susan Chapek - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Brilliant for topics like bus routes, ticket and admission policies, schedules, and walking directions.

But much less satisfying for actual tour guides within destinations, unless you're on a strict schedule that limits you to "must-sees." For additional activities and tours that might turn out to be your personal favorites, be sure to consult other sources, including TripAdvisor.

And we must give strong negative reviews (we bought both the Tuscany and the Rome books) for restaurant/food recommendations. We're guessing that readers quickly flood any eateries Steves recommends, and drag the quality down as the local clientele dwindles and the cook learns to accommodate the triter expectations of tourists. We had a couple of appalling meals using Steves' recommendations, and suggest double-checking the most recent reviews of any given restaurant on TripAdvisor. Or look for places where most of the diners are locals.

We did not use Steves for lodging recommendations, so we can't rate him on that.

We were happy with our Kindle versions, although (as another reviewer mentions), Kindle makes it tedious to search for any given topic. But this is actually a Kindle issue, not a Rick Steves issue, and is not part of why we chose a two-star rating for his books.
