These remarkable pictures convey torment and upheaval, but also the art, culture, and traditions of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and other areas–as well as the photographer’s understanding of humanity and deep commitment to justice. Reza trains his lens not just on war and conflict, but also on friendship and loyalty, family life and love. The book follows Reza’s photographic career and is narrated in his own words, focusing our attention on the costs of war and the human condition. Sebastian Junger contributes an introduction, offering intimate insight into what it's like to work with his longtime friend and collaborator.

Synopsis
Born in Iran in 1952, Reza began his career at age 22 photographing the brutal regime of the Shah of Iran. For this he was thrown into prison and tortured. The horrific three-year ordeal did not intimidate or deter him, but instead strengthened his resolve to expose injustice. He made this his life's mission. Released from prison after the Shah was overthrown, Reza photographed poverty and injustice under the Ayatollah.In 1981, he was exiled. Since then his photography has taken him from Kurdistan to Afghanistan, from Lebanon to Rwanda, from Sarajevo to Cairo, to the Bosporus and even to the Great Wall of China. "War and Peace" is a broad retrospective of his work to date, with personal stories and anecdotes accompanying the thematic photo essays. The philosophy of the book is Reza's own: that war is ugly (and needs to be reported on and shown) and that peace is possible (and can also be shown). He believes that humanitarian work is an avenue to combatting war and injustice. Reza's photography boldly expresses the duality of war and peace.

If you're already familiar with Reza Deghati's works then this is a great collection. A wonderful pictorial book that can change your views about the world so much. The photos are well done and beautiful, yet they mostly say the stories of less fortunate people from across the globe: Afghanistan, Somalia, China, Turkey, Cambodia, Former USSR republics and many more. If you don't know about Mr. Reza, then you should familiarize yourself with him and his works. 5/5. Great collection in and out.
