Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.com

At adolescence, says Mary Pipher, "girls become 'female impersonators' who fit their whole selves into small, crowded spaces." Many lose spark, interest, and even IQ points as a "girl-poisoning" society forces a choice between being shunned for staying true to oneself and struggling to stay within a narrow definition of female. Pipher's alarming tales of a generation swamped by pain may be partly informed by her role as a therapist who sees troubled children and teens, but her sketch of a tougher, more menacing world for girls often hits the mark. She offers some prescriptions for changing society and helping girls resist. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Kirkus Reviews

Clinical psychologist Pipher turns her attention to female adolescence in contemporary America. Pipher examines not just the girls themselves but the society they inhabit, which she terms ``girl-poisoning.'' Looking at why a generation of girls who ought to have benefited from the women's movement are losing rather than gaining self-esteem as they become women, she takes on divorce, eating disorders, self-mutilation, sexual pressure, and MTV, among other things. She also posits that intelligent girls are more prone to depression because they are more aware of their surroundings and therefore more aware of the new constraints they face as they leave childhood. Pipher integrates literature, memoirs, and memories of her own adolescence and that of her daughter; she also has a deft way of summing up psychological phenomena in layperson's terms, as when she dubs the changes that girls go through ``a social and developmental Bermuda Triangle.'' The summaries of her own sessions with adolescent girls add liveliness as well. Some of the patients have laserlike insight into their own situations, like the depressed 15-year-old who muses that at her age ``[a]ll five hundred boys want to go out with the same ten anorexic girls.' '' Serious and thoughtful material presented with the fluidity of good fiction--sure to appeal to parents, teachers, and anyone interested in modern American culture. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Because girls get pregnant, attempt suicide more often, and generally act out their stress more in sorrow than in anger, it is in the form of girls that this book finds the evidence that it is looking for. However, I believe that expressing the problem in gendered terms is a short-sighted and rather patronizing mistake (Albiet the same complaint could be expressed against books that claim to examine the plight of boys.)

To put it bluntly, various isms (including sexism but also racism, classism, and especially ageism), social expectations, and the current school system conspire to make adolescence a confusing and toxic experience for nearly all teens, no matter which 'bits' they were born with. Girls AND boys are suffering from being forced into social straightjackets, from excessively strict and/or detached parents, from mixed sexual signals, rape and exploitation, and from cruelly undervaluing expectations in the classroom. These issues need to be addressed across the board and not turned into one more subject in which we pit boys against girls.

"Girl Poisoning" Culture 26. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Reviving Ophelia is a well-written book. It does a great job exploring the issues that adolescent girls are facing and how our culture influences adolescent girls today. Some of the issues adressed include drugs and alcohol, sex and violence, eating disorders, and depression. I agree that adolescent girls are strongly influenced by our culture, but I think strong family values could carry these girls through the hardships of adolescence. The author suggests that adolescent girls have a low self-worth and low self-esteem. Adolescent girls face pressures to be someone who they are not and this causes the loss of their "true self." She explains why our culture is not a healthy environment for adolescent girls. She emphasizes the negative aspects of our culture and says that we live in a "girl poisoning" culture. It is a culture that is look-obsessed, violent, and very troublesome for adolescent girls. Phipher says we need to strengthen these girls so they can live within our society. The author provides interesting, but eye opening case histories for each issue presented in the book. For example, Tammy was a seventeen year-old girl that was brought in by her mother because she was cutting her breasts. Tammy felt the need to cut herself whenever she fought with her boyfriend. She thought she was going crazy and felt better after cutting herself. She had developed a bad habit of hurting herself physically when she was in emotional pain. Phipher encourages her clients to keep journals and helps them to find healthier ways of dealing with their stress or pain. The case histories really opened my eyes to the severity and complexity of the issues adolescent girls are faced with today. This is a great book for anyone involved with adolescent girls. I would recommend it to parents, teachers, and even adolescent girls to read. I think it is an excellent resource, which could give some understanding into the complexities of adolescent girls. It provides a great deal of information about how our culture greatly influences the attitudes, self-esteem, and actions of adolescent girls. It is a great book!

I am a college student and am currently enrolled in several education classes. Our class was able to choose from several different books and I recently finished the book "Reviving Ophelia." I believe that this book helps to open the public's eyes about the life of a teenage girl in our present society. I wish that my parents had read this book or one similar to it when I was going through my "adolescent years." I honestly believe that it would have helped to explain some of my moods and attitudes and would have definitely helped my parents to understand the pressure to "fit in" that I and most other young girls felt during my teenage years. Mary Pipher tackles situations that most parents never even know their daughters are experiencing; she attempts to explain girls distinct "moodiness," drug and alcohol use, and their reasoning for wanting to distance themselves from their parents and yet stay close to them as well. This book can help to enlighten today's adults about what life can be like for our teenage girls. Many girls may never experience many of the situations discussed in the book; however, this book can prepare adults for these situations and even help young women know that others have been there as well.
