DARK TIDE, by Elizabeth Haynes, is character driven suspense novel about Genevieve Shipley, a former computer salesperson and erotic dancer. Driven by a promise she made to her late father, Genevieve took a second job as an erotic dancer to earn extra money to buy a house boat. The novel opens with Genevieve hosting a party on that boat with her new friends in the marina, and her former friends in London. Later that night, a dead body, a former friend at the club, washes up against Genevieve's boat.
The story then begins, with flashbacks to Genevieve's journey into the world of Barclay's, the slimy owner, Fitz, and the mysterious protector, Dylan. Chapters jump back to the present, with her quirky friends wondering what Genevieve is hiding, and a policeman Jim starting to get inside Genevieve's soul.
Something obviously happened at the Barclay, and Genevieve is waiting for Dylan to contact her again on phone he gave her. The past and present collide eventually and show that there really wasn't much at all to the plot. For me, that was disappointing. However, Haynes is such a good writer, that I was entertained the entire novel. But, after reading, it is a bit disappointing that there really wasn't much to the plot.
As shown by the reviews so far, readers have mixed feelings about this book. Just keep in mind, if you are reading and waiting for something big to happen, it never will. But, the characters are interesting, and that made the story work for me.
