From the Acclaimed Author of Chronicles of the Kings

After decades of exile, the prophesies are coming true--King Cyrus has declared the Jews may return to Jerusalem. Iddo, a priest, is sure this is a sign of God's renewed favor. For too long they've remained in Babylon, and many, including Iddo's sons, are losing the faith that sets them apart. And so only a few choose to leave everything to return--return to their home and their God.

Nothing about their journey to the Promised Land is easy. As hardships mount, even the faithful, like Iddo's beloved wife, Dinah, question the sacrifice of following God's leading. Zechariah, Iddo's oldest grandson, feels torn between his grandfather's ancient beliefs and the family they left behind. But one life-changing encounter with the Holy One gives him insight that will change Zechariah--and history--forever.

Bringing the Old Testament to vibrant life, Return to Me tells the compelling story of two men living by faith in the midst of doubt, the women who love them, and the faithful remnant struggling to rebuild their lives in obedience to the God who beckons them home.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Return to Me was a Joy to Read! 16. Oktober 2013
Von Katie Garvin - Veröffentlicht auf
I've read a few of Lynn Austin's work in the past, and have always enjoyed the trip into the past that I've experienced through her books. Return to Me was no exception. With stellar writing and an intriguing and gripping plot, it didn't take me long to get lost in the characters lives.

I always really enjoy reading Biblical Fiction, and when I learned that Return to Me was about the Jews return to Jerusalem after their captivity in Babylon, I couldn't resist this book - I'd never read a book on this particular time period or historical event before, and was thoroughly intrigued!

The opening of Return to Me did a fabulous job of taking me back in time to be with Daniel when he was summoned for that all-important interpretation of the 'handwriting on the wall'. Austin portrayed Daniel so well - I was intrigued and interested in this character and his way of thinking. When you can read a story that portrays a character so well, it doesn't feel like your reading it at all -- but seeing it lived out in your mind -- I call that an incredible gift on the author's part. Those are the stories that you fly through, enjoy the best, and remember the longest.

Return to Me by Lynn Austin was a joy to read. I loved the biblical setting, the characters, the historical event...everything! As I've already said, the writing was amazing. The storyplot was great, too! If you haven't read any books by Austin, then I highly recommend you get a copy of Return to Me and enjoy it as soon as possible! :-)

I reviewed this book for Bethany via Litfuse. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A wonderful Biblical Account based on the books of Erza and Nehemiah 17. Oktober 2013
Von Michele A. Gerrells - Veröffentlicht auf
I love Biblical fiction. I truly do! Now I know you may think that reading Biblical fiction is not the true account from the Bible and by and large it is not. Biblical fiction is a story taken from the Bible and told from an authors perspective. Which of course does not always keep with the true account of that same story in the Bible. However when I read a story based on the Bible it always causes me to dig deeper into the actual Biblical account of the story. I want to get out my Bible and read for myself the account of the story and find the true meaning of the story. I want to research the story and learn from it.

Lynn Austin does exactly that with her newest Book Return to Me, Book One of The Restoration Chronicles. I loved this book! I loved the richness of the story, the descriptions of Babylon and Jerusalem. The struggles of the Jewish people as they return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple. It never occurred to me that even though the Jewish people were exiled to Babylon and grieved and longed for their return to Jerusalem, that many had became complacent. The Jewish people had been exiled to Babylon for 70 years. Many were settled there with their lives and families. They wanted to stay. To remain with what was familiar to them. They were frightened of change. Afraid of the future, the unknown and the long arduous journey back to Jerusalem.

It was sad to me to see Iddo’s own sons not want to return to their homeland. The struggle between families and how torn so many were. Once they arrived back in Jerusalem there were more struggles.

What I took away from this story was to trust God always, in all things and in all ways, regardless of what is going on around us or what seems to be nearly impossible. This story reminds me that even today we can apply these Biblical principles to our lives.

Lynn Austin is one of my favorite writers of Biblical fiction. You are in for a wonderful treat when you pick up one of her books and Return to Me does not disappoint!

disclosure: I received this book from Litfuse in exchange for my honest opinion. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not like previous Austin titles... 26. November 2013
    Von MH613 - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition
I am a Lynn Austin fan, so I was ecstatic to receive this book for free from Bethany House Publishers to review. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with this book. It was not what I expected from Austin. Her characters always grab me and pull me into their stories - I usually finish Austin's books wishing I could read more about her characters. This book, however, left me struggling to connect to any of the characters. As another reviewer stated, I was frustrated with the characters. I felt they lacked dimension - I had a difficult time connecting with them.
I understand that this is Biblical Fiction based upon historical facts, but fiction should provide the liberty to add more dimension to the story while maintaining historical facts. I was bored. I trudged through this book in hopes of a spark in the plot, but the book trudged along a one-dimensional plot line for 200+ pages. When there would seem to be a spark in the storyline, it was resolved on the very next page, so there was no suspense at all in this book.
I would recommend it for insight into Biblical history, as it beautifully describes the rebuilding of the temple and the events surrounding it. But, as for entertainment, I would not recommend it. There was not enough drama/action/romance/activity, character development, or relationships to keep my interest. I simply trudged through the book so that I could give a honest review.

    5.0 von 5 Sternen RETURN TO ME - A QUICK LOOK! 20. September 2013
Von Amazon Reviewer - Veröffentlicht auf
With Return to Me, the first in the Restoration Chronicles Series, bestselling author and Christy Award Hall of Fame member, Lynn Austin, launches a new biblical saga of hope and redemption following the footprints of the exiled Israelites in Babylon and their return to Jerusalem.

Babylon was a land that was once foreign to them. It was a strange land! They sat by the river bank and wept for their homeland, deeply yearning to return. They were taken as captives - the Babylonians were their sworn enemies. Yet, when months rolled into years and years into decades, spiritual lethargy set in, Babylon becomes their home and the enemies became family.

But a faithful remnant continues to pray for deliverance. When the time finally came, very few were willing to take advantage of the offer made by King Cyrus. They had become complacent. The hunger, thirst and desire were no longer there. Foreign had become home, and the enemy was now family.

The journey home was not an easy one. Families were torn apart, many choosing to remain in Babylon, and only a few faithful ready to make the arduous journey. Like the wandering in the wilderness during the time of Moses, many began to question. But it was Iddo, the priest, and his grandson, Zechariah, who remained steadfast. Even Zechariah had his own doubts. But one life-changing encounter with God transformed him and history forever.

Based on the book of Ezra and Nehemiah, this fictional account of a period in Jewish history is an absorbing story of two men who stood up for a cause in the midst of doubt and desperation as the faithful remnant struggle to reconstruct their lives in submission to the will of God who beckons them to the Promised Land.

There are some hard lessons to be learned: God is always working in our lives no matter where we are, or how far we may have distanced ourselves from Him. He is always concern of our well-being, and wants us to trust Him fully.

And more importantly, God is a God of wonders and miracles. He is not helpless even amongst the ruins...

3.0 von 5 Sternen Details of Postexilic Judaism Are Inaccurate 5. Dezember 2013
    Von theresa - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition
Return to Me focuses on the return to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile, and the rebuilding of the temple. It is at this time in Jewish history that the faith is restored, liturgy is developed, and a structure is put into place in order to help the people return spiritually to God just as they have spiritually. Austin's story demonstrates this in part, but not with accurate supplementing detail.

For instance, she portrays the Men of the Great Assembly as a functioning entity prior to the return, and also mentions the building of a fence around the Torah, but both are not formed until after the return. Rather they are introduced during the rebuilding process as the Jewish people demonstrate the renewal/re-dedication of the covenant. While there was a faithful remnant during the exile, it is very unlikely that serious devotion to Torah was being practiced (and especially not in formal yeshivas). Austin also describes other aspects of Modern Judaism that also would have been out of place at this time (e.g. the practice of kindling the sabbath lights comes from the Middle Ages).

To an extent, it may be positive that the Judaism described reflects modern rather than ancient practices. It is beneficial for the church to recognize modern Jewish culture, and in a way, brings the modern reader into the story (which is thematically very relevant for today). However, I am pursuing an M.Div. in Messianic Judaism, and had just finished a course in the history and practice of Jewish liturgy when I began reading this book. Due to my growing knowledge of Jewish history and culture, I was so distracted by the lack of historical accuracy within Austin's presentation of postexilic Judaism that I could not relax and enjoy the story. It is too bad, because I love this kind of historical/biblical fiction, and especially love the second temple period.

Readers who are looking to understand the broad strokes of biblical history, and are less concerned with accuracy in the details, will likely enjoy this book. The characters are well-developed, the story flows well, the writing style is enjoyable, and there are moments of (I believe) divinely inspired insight. I would read another book from Lynn Austin; but this one I just could not enjoy properly.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House.
