After the notorious outlaws Amaranthe and Sicarius helped overthrow the corrupt faction controlling the empire and brought in a great war hero to lead the nation to prosperity, they finally earned their pardons—and some time off. A tropical vacation cruising around in a private submarine? Perfect. But their trip is interrupted by a summons from the new president: they're needed back at home. Trouble unlike anything they've ever dealt with threatens to destroy the capital city and throw the fledgling republic into chaos.

The follow-up to The Emperor's Edge series, Republic takes place a few months after the events of Forged in Blood I & II. It is a complete 210,000-word novel.

I am a pretty big fan of Buroker's work. I like the steampunk-y worlds she creates and the engaging characters that inhabit them. As of yet, I have not read the entire Emperor's Edge series, just the first book; though after reading Republic I am more interested in the whole series.

This is a long book. There is a lot of story here to enjoy. I like the multiple layers of story. There is the overarching threat to life, limb and city as well as a few relationship subplots that run in and around it. And then even deeper a few threads that feel like she is tying up the last few loose ends from the main series.

The writing is pretty much on par with the other books of hers I have read, but with six different points of view telling their visions of what is happening, sometimes the scene switches take a few extra sentences to get a grasp on who is talking. I do like that scenes are told from different perspectives. Especially the relationship bits are well done. To see that both sides of certain pairings are just as insecure as the other. I liked Sicarius's POV scenes as well. He comes across as so impassive in the rest of what I have read of the world, it is nice to see is own thoughts.

The tension of the overarching threat builds nicely and smoothly during the book. It does feel dangerous and real in a lot of different places. Like characters could indeed be killed. I did find the climax somewhat anti-climactic. It was satisfying, but flat somehow. The resolution of the book is good, don't get me wrong. I guess I just wanted more special effecty stuff in my head at the climax.

Overall i definitely recommend the book. It both fits into the rest of the books and can be read as a standalone, although there are a lot of references that remind you there is more out there.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A masterful transition novel between the old empire and the new Republic! 22. April 2014
Von R. Pettijohn - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a few copy of this book for a honest review - one I'm more than happy to provide!

I just finished reading Republic and I simply enjoyed every page of it. Republic takes place after the events in Emperor’s Edge series (EE 1 available FREE on Amazon). While you can certainly pick this book up and enjoy it – I believe you would enjoy it far more if you have read all the works up to this point (You could read the Swords and Salt books after this one, in fact that would likely be best time line wise). This includes the books from the Encrypted Series. Both series blend so naturally together in the same world, spanning 20 or so years.

For Republic, the story is told from six different viewpoints. This is a break from Buroker’s normal style of one or two but given the characters she selected it works extremely well. Given the characters, it does help to have their earlier background already percolating through your thoughts when you get to this tale. Not required, but it does make it that much more amazing. For those interested, the story is told from the following viewpoints: Amaranthe, Sicarius (still love his POV), Sespian, Maldynado, Tikaya, and Mailiki.

The story centers around the troubles that could only ever show up in this fantastic world Buroker created where a struggling new Republic is attempting to deal with the aftermath of… What to say that won’t be a spoiler for the EE books or this one.

There is plenty of action, intrigue and explosions (lots and lots of explosions). New President Rais is under attack from a number of fronts. Sircarius and Amaranthe are called back to the capital from their extended vacation to help deal with matters. Tikaya (Rais wife) has to deal with the polities of being a foreigner married to the most famous historically figure in the former Empire that was until recently thought dead by many. Sespian is adjusting to no longer being the Emperor and having to actually afford things and clean up after himself. Maldynado is struggling with life after the "gang" - And so much more!

We have an invasive man eating plant taking over the harbor, a new assassin in town, an ancient cult resurfacing in the face of new religious freedoms, young love, old problems resurfacing, realistic interaction between established couples, and let us not forget plenty of things exploding!

Like all the books in this world, there is romance but it is not the central story. The stories revolve around mysteries, action and adventure in such a delightful mix that I was hooked on this world from the first book and this book just sparked even more interested in the world that will be opening up with the new Republic.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Brilliant! And explosive read! 27. April 2014

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.

My problem is that I'm obsessed with this world, and the reasons for that are simple:
1. It's such an amazingly realistic, believable world,
2. the characters as so familiar and real to me that I enjoy being in their company so much.

I think I can safely say that this is my favourite book in the series.

My daughter and I were reading in a coffee shop and I kept embarrassing her by laughing out loud just about every time Maldynado stepped on the page. He is even funnier in this book than he is in the other EE books - and that's saying something.

In this book, set soon after the establishment of the Republic, the team, with the addition of Tikaya (whom I love) and Mahliki) are challenged by a variety of evils including a sentient plant! And what a plant that is. I loved every description of it and could visualise it perfectly in my mind's eye - it was almost a seventh hero in the plot (or rather villain) and I almost thought it needed a POV of its own!

As usual the rest of the characters are just wonderful and I loved getting up to speed with Sespian in his new life as a penniless student. But my favourite characters still remain Amaranthe and Sicarious. I could read anything with those two in it. Note to Lindsay: A series about their exploits in their new jobs would be very gratefully received . . . .

As one expects from Lindsay Buroker, the action in Republic is fast-paced, nail-biting stuff even with six POVs. It never lets up for a minute and there are constant twists and explosions (only a few of them could be blamed on Maldynado) to satisfy even my craving for action.

The is some romance in the book - low key, but there - and it was so sweetly done, adding a wonderful sparkle.

All in all, I loved this story and I am so not ready to leave this world. Please Lindsay, don't stop coming up with adventures for the team. In the meantime, it has inspired me to start the series all over again. I can't wait.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another great adventure with the Emperor's Edge Gang 22. April 2014

A few months after Turgonia's empire is replaced with a republic and there's already a crisis growing... A plant to be exact. A monstrous plant that can't be contained and may be eating people.... And then there's the religious fanatics that are suddenly showing up everywhere... And then there's the Assassin What's a beleaguered country to do?

Maldyndado has an idea - get a job so his girlfriend will stay in town. Sespian has an idea - build a capitol building. Mahliki has an idea - get samples of the plant for experiments. And Amaranthe and Sicarius have ideas...

This was fun, fast paced, and thoroughly satisfying. The team is changing, perhaps growing up. And the new relationships they're forging with each other are wonderful. But don't worry - there's plenty of snarky dialog and hats. And explosions. And blown up vehicles... Everything you've come to love. You want to read this. And when you finish you're going to want to reread everything again.

You do not need to have read the prior 7 Emperor's Edge Books to enjoy this, but trust me, you're missing out....

This is the best book in the Emperors' Edge series. It has all the best aspects of the previous books and the writing is much smoother than all the rest. There are no tangents that distract and the characters are more solid and believable than ever. Bravo!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Everything is Awesome 27. April 2014

By the time many series get to 8 novels in length, they have clearly jumped the shark, or nuked the fridge, or whatever the kids are calling it these days. Not so in this case. Republic is just as good or better than its predecessors. Characters continued to grow and develop. The gang faces new and interesting challenges. Things blow up. I loved it.
