This book was enjoyable to me because it offers a history of swords the way they were used in the renaissance that corrects the assumptions and bias modern people have about them. It distinguished among the different types in a way that differs from foil fencing today or fencing in the movies. It makes the differences very clear at the same time it shows how effective and complex they really were and not the crude sloppy style sometimes thought. The hundreds of pictures make sense and are clearly drawn to give you a sense of motion and movement. You come away with an appreciation for how much really went into real sword fighting with real swords, not fencing for audiences or points. That alone makes the book one of a kind and something special. The tactical advice on practice sparring was very interesting. The editing could have been better and more quotes from ancient masters would have been useful, but for showing there really was something to renaissance martial arts its priceless.

Only one practical, illustrated guide to the lost art of Western swordsmanship exists, and it is John Clements' Renaissance Swordsmanship. Clements, along with several colleagues, has been engaged for several years in the ambitious project of separating the true fighting practices of the Renaissance Masters of Defense from all the nonsense you see in the movies. His approach combines a careful reading of the period manuals with live-steel experimentation and testing. The result is a book that serves as a practical handbook for the student who wants to learn not how to "fence" but how to fight with a sword. Clements' illustrations are ideal -- much better than photographs at communicating the necessary movements. In addition, Clements provides useful commentary on modern abberations such as stage combat, sport fencing, and SCA-style fantasy fighting to set the true art in contrast to false resonances in contemporary culture. At a time when our memory of the Western martial tradition is all but eclipsed by the illusion of Hollywood sport fencing and an inordinant reverence for the martial arts of the East, this book is essential for anyone who wants to understand what Renaissance Swordsmanship was really all about.

Das Buch hält, was der Titel verspricht. Nach einer kurzen Einführung wird zunächst einmal der Rapier genau erklärt: historischer Hintergrund, Aussehen, Varianten, Rapierklingen und -spitzen, Halten des Rapiers, usw. Dann folgen die Techniken für verschiedene Konstellationen: nur Rapier, Rapier & Dolch, Rapier & Buckler und sogar besonderes wie Paraden mit der freien Hand und der Einsatz seines Mantels im Kampf. Alle Techniken sind sehr schön und verständlich beschrieben, und aufgrund der hervorragenden Illustrationen sehr anschaulich und leicht nachvollziehbar. Zum Schluß werden einige Bilder aus historischen Fechtbüchern gezeigt und auch kurz erläutert. Ein Epilog und Nachwort des Autors runden das Buch ab.Aufgrund der sehr guten Beschreibungen sowie der Illustrationen kann man die Techniken auch sehr gut aus diesem Buch lernen und üben. Es ist eine echte Freude für alle, die wissen wollen, wie man mit einem Rapier kämpfen kann - eine wahre Empfehlung. --------------------------English----------------------------- The book is exactly that, what the titel promises. After a short introduction first of all the rapier is explained: historical background, appearance, varities, rapier-blades and -points, gripping the rapier, and so on. Then it's time for the techniques for different constellations: only rapier, rapier & dagger, rapier & buckler and even special stuff like free-hand parrying and combat with rapier and a cloak. All techniques are very well and perfectly understandable. Finally some pictures of historical fencing manuals are shown and explained. An epilogue and an advice to readers from the autor are the conclusion of this book. Because of the very good describtions and the illustrations the techniques of this book can be easily learned and pracised.
