Kurzbeschreibung

The hill town is Calcata, 30 miles north of Rome. And the relic is (wait for it)...Christ's foreskin. No, really. Proudly owned by the town for centuries, it has disappeared, with rumours of foul play and conspiracy on the part of a number of groups and individuals - including the Vatican.Jesus' foreskin, the snipped off tip of the saviour's penis, is the only piece of his body supposedly left on Earth. As a religious relic, it has been a source of both devotion and embarrassment for the Catholic church, but it is a curio shrouded in secrecy and mystery. Since the Middle Ages it travelled around Europe before coming to rest in the small church at Calcata, where it was proudly displayed and carried through the town in an annual procession. Until 1983, that is, when it vanished.David Farley embarks on a quest to discover what really happened to this venerated (although hopefully not venereal) church organ, uncovering 2,000 years of history, from the unification of Italy to the early fathers of the Church. He places the "Holy Foreskin" within the historical context of the cult of relics, the history of circumcision and ancient phallic worship. Simultaneously, he explores the divine powers which have been prescribed to the relic, notably its miraculous fertility-giving abilities. Along the way, the author encounters a host of benevolent (and sinister) characters who both help and hinder his search for the truth. It is a truly fascinating journey, which paints an eccentric and rarely seen portrait of Italy, the cradle which preserves and protects Jesus' most sensitive and sacred part. This book presents a real-life quest for the strangest religious relic of all - the Holy Foreskin of Jesus Christ. From a tiny Italian hill-town to the heart of the Vatican City itself, this bo
