A British journalist's debut thriller, Remembrance Day has the high-intensity impact of a 24-point headline. Con Lindow, an Irish-born molecular biologist recently relocated to London after a distinguished career in the U.S., is waiting for his brother near a busy Underground station when a bus explodes, gravely wounding Eammon Lindow and destroying the lives of dozens of passengers and bystanders. When Con wakes up in a hospital, he finds himself the chief suspect in what the British Security Service and Scotland Yard believe is another IRA outrage. Only one man believes in his innocence: Commander Kenneth Foyle, head of the Anti-Terrorism unit of the Metropolitan Police Force, who is frustrated by the infighting between his own department and various operatives of the intelligence services that is hindering his efforts to solve the crime.

A false passport and a cryptic note hidden in his brother's apartment are Con's only leads in his desperate attempt to clear his name. The hunt for Ian Rhodes, the rogue MI5 agent responsible for the bombing, takes Con to Ireland, Boston, and Maine, accompanied by an attractive and mysterious friend of Eammon's who has her own reasons for wanting to stop Rhodes from carrying out his plan to blow up the peace talks in one last horrendous gesture of defiance.

Porter's pacing is brilliant, his characters tightly and believably drawn, and his knowledge of the internecine world of British intelligence encyclopedic. This well-crafted novel makes him a worthy successor to John Le Carré; readers will be eagerly anticipating his next effort, hoping for another encounter with the real hero of Remembrance Day, the dogged and likable Commander Foyle. --Jane Adams -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Kirkus Reviews

An Irish national who thought hed left politics behind him is caught between the IRA and the British police when hes suspected of a planting a bomb in a London bus. One minute Constantine Lindow, just arrived from long residence in Boston to take up a research post at Imperial College, was standing on a West End street corner waiting for Eamonn, the brother he hadnt seen in years; the next he was lying on the ground covered with debris. Even worse, the following day a pair of Her Majestys lawmen spirited him away from his hospital bed to ask him some pointed questions about the explosion; about Eamonns IRA connections; and about Cons own involvement in a churchyard bombing about which hed been questioned and released 15 years before. Only Commander Kenneth Foyle, head of the Metropolitan Police Forces Anti-Terrorism Branch, seems to believe Cons claims of innocence. But Foyle, hemmed in by superiors who want a quick arrest and mi5 colleagues desperate to conceal their own dealings with the real bomber, is soon off the case. By the time Con calls him with a promising theory of how the bomb was set off, its too late for Foyle to do anything with the information. And soon enough Con is under pressure himselffrom IRA stalwarts back home who demand that he run a dangerous mission for them, and from Eamonns comely friend Mary Menihan, who detaches herself from his brothers memory with indecent haste to become a sidekick full of her own ideas and loyalties. As long as Porter keeps his first novel cutting furiously between Con and Foyle, the thrills come reliably. But Vanity Fairs UK editor cant resist tossing in an elaborate cipher, internecine rivalries in the Service, and enough explosives to keep Hollywood busy for a whole summer. Still, whatever youre looking for in a thriller is certain to be here, with bells on. -- Copyright ©2000, Kirkus Associates, LP. This book made me stay up at night to finish it. Maquiavelic plot against the lone hero trying to prove his innocence.

Regrettably it slows down a bit towards the last quarter, some things like the evil cold rogues agent who suddenly allows them to escape are not believable. Also some of the subplots would have everybody screaming for help before even engaging them.

It shows the cruel world of terrorism but surprisingly not out of those who might believe in it. Considering that the civil war in Northern Ireland has evil on both sides it is difficult to understand why a potential terrorist and the head of antiterrorism should work together. Con could simply pack up and never return to London. Some other moves are not logical either coming from a highly inteligent and logical person. The author should have give Con's character a darker side. In some parts I missel the laconic twist of Lee Childs early books.

One thing for sure: I'll get a Spy's Life.

A good tale, well told. Well-developed characters are set in an intriguing plot, with a nice balance between procedural detail, descriptive material, and suspense.

Unfortunately the lack of proof-reading [at least in the US, Simon & Schuster edition] results in innumerable typographical errors, which were extremely distracting and spoilt the reading pleasure.

Had the publisher made any effort in this regard, I would have awarded 4 stars.

I hope that Mr. Porter will write more books of this ilk, and that he will take note of this deficiency. END

Remembrance Day is a truly remarkable first novel. There is a depth and richness in plot and characterization not often seen in first time writers. The plot is intricate enough to keep readers happily and compulsively turning the pages. However, a problem with the book is the needless repetition of explanations from one character to another. This serves to slow the book down considerably and adds to the already overblown length. Nonetheless, it remains a compelling thriller and an excellent summer read. Larry Gandle Tampa, FL
