From Booklist

Beverly and Dereck Joubert, famed filmmakers and writers (Hunting with the Moon, 1997), have produced another spectacular examination of wildlife in Africa. Botswana's Okavango Delta, a landlocked region of marshland, rivers, and islands, is the setting for what the authors refer to as the eternal dance: a relentless struggle between buffalo and the lions who prey upon them. Some of these lions were the largest the authors had ever seen, probably a result of the size of their enormous prey and of the effort required to negotiate the water, mud, and reed beds of their home. Following three lion prides active in the area, the authors studied and documented the act of predation itself. Often the setup for the hunt was very tactical and the hunt itself so intricate that it was clearly an example of planning and thinking ahead. Despite the constant hunting pressure, the buffalo herd was growing in number each year while the lion prides fluctuated in size, an example of the shifting balances between predator and prey. Illustrated with Beverly Joubert's phenomenal photographs and limned by her husband's lyrical text. Nancy Bent

Kurzbeschreibung

The tawny lion slinks through golden grass, stealthy and sinuous, utterly concentrated on the hunt, a perfect predator awaiting only the instant when pure instinct triggers the rush, the spring, the ferocious slash of sharp claws and merciless fangs that will bring down her prey. It's a scene as old as Africa itself, yet its sudden, violent drama is always new.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert know it well. For decades they've lived among lions, winning international acclaim for their unique photographs and pioneering documentaries, which record lions' previously unknown behavior such as nocturnal forays and a willingness to stalk their quarry through water. Of all their long experience, the Jouberts consider their two years with the lions of Duba the most exciting, important research they have done—here presented in fascinating text and 100 gripping images.

Month after month, they battled floods, hardship, and danger to capture these spectacular shots of the relentless blood rivalry played out on the Okavanga Delta every day as three separate lion prides harry a huge herd of buffalo. These massive beasts are challenging prey; they fight back fiercely, aggressively seeking out the big cats and attacking them with deadly thrusts of their sharp, sweeping horns. The lions leap and dodge, but not always swiftly enough to escape—and so the ancient struggle goes on.

The companion volume to a new National Geographic film airing in 2006, this is an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of the world's most awe-inspiring hunters, the lethal and beautiful lions of Duba.

Disappointed 15. Dezember 2006
Von D. Kruk - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
I admire grate work done by Beverly and Dereck Joubert with all they movies and books (I own many of them). I even went do Savute to see places they described in previous books.

Needles to say I decided to buy this book blindly as I expected (as always) the highest quality. What was my disappointment when I discovered that this book is poorly printed and almost all photographs look gray. Even photos make in sepia look somewhat artificial. On the top of this cover picture (and many inside) is extremely out of focus. I find it hard to believe that Beverly Joubert would select such images to be printed. Those shortcomings took away all joy I expected to have reading this book.

Relentless Enemies 15. Januar 2007
Von Korak the Killer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Superior photographs are consistent throughout this book. The accompanying prose is well done and provides additional information about the subjects seen through the camera's eye. This book is definitely for anyone who has an interest in lions, buffalo or the African wildlife. This book is the still rendition of the movie which is soon to be available on DVD. The movie has played many times on the National Geographic Channel over the past couple years. The information contained in the book does not lose relevance through time. The Jouberts have again provided a masterpiece.

Magnificent book, insightful text but read with caution. 5. Februar 2009

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
I bought this book after viewing the "Relentless Enemies" DVD. It is just as good and does not merely compliment the film but fills in some important points that a film could not cover such as two detailed hunting plans of the Tsaro pride. Beverly Joubert's photography is stunning, I particulary loved the panoramas that were almost thirty inches wide! These pictures really capture the power and beauty of both the lions and the buffalo. The beauty of the Duba plains is also more evident than in the film due to the scale of the photographs. In one picture alone of a lion stalking a buffalo I saw so many beautiful colors that I felt a tear coming. Dereck Joubert's text is thought provoking and informative but at the same time it disturbed me with its blindless. Dereck Joubert has a glimpse of creation from up close that few people will ever have on Earth and yet he cannot see the order and beauty that that just cries out that this is the work of a Creator. I feel sorry for him and those who will doubt that there is a God because of thinking like this. Yet at the same time this book is a remarkable "catechism" that one can come to certainty of the existence of God with the evidence he leaves in his magnificent creations. This is truly a wonderful book!
