Ragin's work is both though provoking and beautiful. He provides a methodology that goes beyond statistical analysis and the relevance of one variable on another. Rather fs/QCA provides a middle path between quantitative an qualitative research that captures causal complexity.

I was led to this book by Peer Fiss' recent article on fuzzy sets in the Academy of Management Review. The fsQCA methodology had significant appeal for me as I had confronted "insignificant outcomes" in my dissertation research due to a unexpectedly small sample size. Ragin is a key figure, perhaps the founding proponent, of the fsQCA method that he popularized in the 1980s. The concept of using fuzzy set theory to extend qualitative comparative analysis appears logical and Ragin certainly details the application of the method in this book well enough to allow the reader to apply the method.
