Redemption Ark is Alastair Reynolds's third hefty SF novel, a direct sequel to his debut book Revelation Space, and also linked with Chasm City, which won the British SF Association Award. Gripping high-tech action features various groups struggling for control of a cache of "hell-class weapons", while the alien Inhibitors--who stamp out space-going intelligence wherever they find it--are busy dismantling planets to build a doomsday engine of awesome size.

Building on the previous books, the interstellar situation is exhilaratingly complex. Major players from Revelation Space are still at large in the solar system containing the new Inhibitor construction site, the vast old starship Nostalgia for Infinity (hideously transformed and merged with its captain by "Melding Plague"), the hell-weapons, and the colonized planet Resurgam--which may need to be evacuated at speed.

Many light years away, the mechanically enhanced human Conjoiners are fighting a space war around Yellowstone, the world of Chasm City. Although victory approaches, the Conjoiners are frantically building advanced starships and planning to run for their lives, thanks to an incredibly dangerous project that sucked information from the future--including news of the Inhibitors. The Conjoiners have their own internal factions, at least one of which isn't what it seems, and a fresh split leads to a tense relativistic race for the Resurgam system and those coveted hell-weapons. Booby-traps and deadly strategems enliven the desperate journey.

Other, non-Conjoiner humans--not to mention machine intelligences and genetically engineered man-pig chimeras--are caught up in the intrigue and violence. Many members of this large cast have inner secrets, other identities, painful relationships, long-concealed guilt. As at last they converge on the Resurgam system, there are jolting surprises.

Meanwhile, the immense past and future of Reynolds' universe becomes clearer, a cosmic tapestry with the deep-time scope of Stephen Baxter's Xeelee series, ranging from the Dawn War in the early aeons of galactic life to a cataclysmic event still three billion years in the future. A disaster which the loathed robotic Inhibitors are working patiently to minimise....

Reynolds' latest is a large, sprawling tale of war, politics, ideology (including religion), and alien invasion. It starts with the return to base, after 200 years, of an exploration ship filled with corpses. Its central characters are the investigators trying to find what or who killed the ship's occupants: A human (using the term loosely) enemy? Aliens? A nanotech plague? As the investigation proceeds, Reynolds introduces a galaxy's worth of technology and politics, the latter including the faction fight that gives the book its title. Like Reynolds' previous books, this one can be considered a technothriller set in the future, with technology extrapolated from the current states of biotech and artificial intelligence. Human nature is not envisioned as having changed much at all, however, no matter how much intelligence may be augmented. Despite a quite intricate plot, skilled narrative technique and well-developed characters make this a novel most readers will find absorbing and comprehensible. Roland Green

Die Saga nähert sich ihrem Höhepunkt 15. Oktober 2003

Reynolds' bisher drittes Buch führt die Geschichte von "Revelation Space" und "Chasm City" fort. Konnte man bei den ersten beiden Büchern noch sagen, dass man diese lesen kann, ohne dabei an eine Fortsetzung zu denken, trifft dies auf "Redemption Ark" nicht mehr zu. Das Buch steht auf den Fundamenten der ersten beiden, spielen doch bekannte Charaktere aus dem ersten wie auch aus dem zweiten Buch wieder eine wichtige Rolle. Man trifft aber auch auf einige neue Charaktere, welche Reynolds perfekt in die bestehende Geschichte integriert. Zur gleichen Zeit beschreibt er mehr von seinem Universum und vervollständigt langsam ein im ersten Buch begonnenes Bild. Die Konstante des Universums bleibt erhalten und Reynolds' Stil verliert nichts von seiner Frische und von seinem Einfallsreichtum.
Schade nur, dass man in einigen Abschnitten spürt, dass die Revisoren des Verlages hie und da etwas gekürzt haben.
Dennoch eine absolute Kaufempfehlung!

Diese "minor glitches" sind teilweise schon schmerzhaft. Die Personen handeln in einer Art und Weise, die für mich nicht nachvollziehbar ist. Die Charaktere werden sehr kurz aufgebaut und im Verlauf der Handlung benehmen sie sich dann total "daneben". Für das altruistische Verhalten von bspw. Scorpio und Ilia fehlt mir persönlich irgendein Motiv. Für den Verlauf des Erkundungsfluges in den Gasplaneten fehlen mir echt immer noch die Worte. Das war schon ungewollt sehr komisch. Die Armee der Schweine (sic) und ihr Anführer sind ein weiterer Lacher. Einzig Clavain wird einigermaßen glaubwürdig entwickelt, das ist einfach zu wenig.

Das durchaus interessante Universum mit Maschinenintelligenz, Schwarmintelligenz, begrenzten technischen Möglichkeiten durch die Verschmelzungsseuche etc. wird leider verschenkt.

Salve,

Mr. Reynolds draws his ideas from other sources, as most authors do, so nothing to say against that. his charakters are well explained and coherent, the story thrilling. But, not much new in terms of ideas make it in the novel. Examples: The Mind-Linked-Starfaring-bio-enhanced tribe with a row with the purists is nice to meet again, but after one has read Peter F. Hamiltons "Armageddon" he can offer no new insights into hive mind cultures and the battle descriptions are lacking detail as well. Some of this scenes remind me of Iain M. Banks', Excession. As with the plot of alien machinery that kills starfaring cultures, this is a nice negation of Arthur C. Clarkes benevolent aliens. Both come into play, when live reaches the point to spread to the next planets, but one want's to enhance and the other to suppres. One thing that annoyed me quite a lot, is that he uses Terms for factions of humanity that he does not explain. What the heck is an Ultra, for example. Realy thriling are his descriptions of the physics involved. The end of this book is lengthy and I realy wished to be over with it soon, as he does not conclude the conflict. Maybe because there will be another book in the series that spins the story to an end.
