Kurzbeschreibung

6. Dezember 2010
Audio recordings are the calling card with which musicians share and promote their work so a knowledge of recording techniques and technologies is essential to the 21st century musician. Recording On a Budget provides a comprehensive introduction to the recording arts from a budget-conscious perspective. Written by a professional musician and educator, this book is idea for musicians, educators, music students, songwriters and hobbyists. A central theme of the book is that it is possible to make quality recordings with a modest selection of recording tools. Chapters cover the selection and use of all of the components of a project studio including microphones, mixer, computer, digital audio workstation software, and signal processors. Additional chapters provide a solid foundation in acoustics, audio recording, podcasting, mixing and mastering. The final chapter of the book features do-it-yourself projects that can be completed with a modest selection of tools. Most musicians have developed their ears to a high level so a special focus is placed on the development of recording technique through experimentation and the application of critical listening skills. The book is supported by an online resource of nearly 250 audio excerpts detailing all of the primary topics of the book. Recording on a Budget is ideal for: * Musicians who are interested in recording a quality CD or demo * Choir, orchestra, and band directors who want to record vocal or instrumental ensemble * Student performers and composers who wish to record a performance or produce their own music * Bands interested in recording live concerts or recording an album in a home studio * Videographers interested in recording location sound, voice-overs or music * Songwriters who wish to produce a quality demo * Podcasters and ALL who want to make quality recordings without spending fortunes on equipment. Readers will learn * to cut budget corners without sacrificing audio quality * to choose the right microphone for the job (and where to place it) * to assemble an equipment rack, mixing desk, and speakers stand * to avoid common mistakes * And to be creative and have fun with recording technology Visit the companion website at www.oup.com/us/recordingonabudget for free selection of sample recordings!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great into into recording. 23. Februar 2011

This book is a great starting point if you are interested in recording high quality audio. Musicians, podcasters, singers and even videographers will learn about how to get great sounding audio without breaking the bank. The author does a nice job of reviewing software and hardware options available with lots of specific recommendations.

There is just enough technical so you get an understanding of the important concepts without bogging you down with unimportant details. There are a lot of illustrations in the the book especially to demonstrate concepts and the do it yourself projects.

As a bonus there are lots of online examples to help you listen to the results you are getting and fix any issues that you may be having with your recording.

Overall a great read.

The title of this book does it little justice. What's within this well written book is so much more than just 'recording on a budget'. The most useful stuff I digested had more to do with understanding the complexities of acoustics and sound, that entity which fills the air that we try to capture with the utmost fidelity within the confines of our walls. That's my focus and Brent doesn't just describe how to accomplish this but he explains why and how it all works and what you should and maybe shouldn't do. Almost every home-recording blog addresses the subject of sound absorbers and diffusers and before you decide to go thru the expense and time of building either, read what this book has to say about them. What may work for someone else may not work for you, and the reasons are explained in detail. The complex nature of frequency analysis is broken down in clear, easy to understand concepts that Brent will often say 'goes beyond the scope of this material', after which he clearly explains. Put simply, this book covers what you need to know. Whether you're building your own computer, mixing desk, equipment racks, speaker stands, or want to create your own quality balanced cables, the DIY projects explain and walk you thru each step. Recording, mixing and mastering techniques are clearly examined and described, supported with illustrations, tables, and images that guide you through each process. If you think you don't have that ear which can discern the very subtle differences in sound, then you need to read this book. I've been a musician most of my life and have been into recording for almost 30 years and I found this book insightful and enjoyable. It's the kind of book you'll want to keep within reach.

5.0 von 5 Sternen My favorite for small setups 10. Dezember 2012

Though this says "low budget", i think this is also a great review of how to get professional quality sound with a minimalism viewpoint. It's one of the few books that goes over ortf in detail, as well as other dual mic stereo techniques - which produce extremely high quality recordings with a small amount of gear. I am following his guidelines with a set of km184's, with great results for my film.

I like making music videos at concerts where I have very limited resources and options for recording either audio or video. I also like video logging now and again. This book has some very good low budget info on recording sound. I good read.
