Pressestimmen

"Excellent history presented in well-written chapters and an innovative approach to the history of science - this volume makes an interesting read." Jane Maienschein, Arizona State University"

Kurzbeschreibung

This book is the first devoted to modern biology’s innovators and iconoclasts: men and women who challenged prevailing notions in their fields. Some of these scientists were Nobel Prize winners, some were considered cranks or gadflies, some were in fact wrong. The stories of these stubborn dissenters are individually fascinating. Taken together, they provide unparalleled insights into the role of dissent and controversy in science and especially the growth of biological thought over the past century.

Each of the book’s nineteen specially commissioned chapters offers a detailed portrait of the intellectual rebellion of a particular scientist working in a major area of biology--genetics, evolution, embryology, ecology, biochemistry, neurobiology, and virology as well as others. An introduction by the volume’s editors and an epilogue by R. C. Lewontin draw connections among the case studies and illuminate the nonconforming scientist’s crucial function of disturbing the comfort of those in the majority. By focusing on the dynamics and impact of dissent rather than on “winners” who are credited with scientific advances, the book presents a refreshingly original perspective on the history of the life sciences.

"A Wealth of Insight Into Fertile Minds" 28. September 2009
Von Russell A. Rohde MD - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
"Rebels, Mavericks, and Heretics in Biology", Edited by Oren Harman and Michael R. Dietrich. Yale Univ. Press, New Haven 2008. ISBN: 978-0-300-11639-7, PB 400/371. Epilogue (R.C. Lewontin) 9 pgs. Contributors 3 pgs. Index 16 pgs. 9 1/4" x 5 3/4".

An unusual, but stimulating review of 19 scientists whose demeanor of forceful individualistic behavior in thinking patterns is gathered within a single volume by a similar multitude of commissioned scientific writers to yield a wonderful cross-section of the post-modern intellectual breed studying mostly life sciences, imprimis biology and genetics.

My own background in chromosomal genetics and research made the books' information and factoids particularly enticing to me. Collectively, the authors' painstaking writing style embraced much scientific jargon with a minuscule of "prose vulgaris" so reading could be tedious at times, at least for the non-scientist, but well worth the effort.

Likely, each reader will identify with one of more of these rebels or mavericks as their particular type of hero or anti-hero, but I found each and every recital to be poignant, charming, factual, refreshing and challenging. The Editors are to be commended for their fine choice of principled writers whose mission was to aggregate a unique stunning perspective of science and scientists doing their thing, most often rubbing elbows in the ivory towers, some of which then went forth to receive notable awards, including Nobel Prize.

Wonderful eclectic collection 7. April 2009
Von hallucigenia - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This is a wonderful, eclectic collection of essays about a variety of scientists spanning many areas of 20th century biology. The lineup of contributors represent younger as well as more established scholars, and the quality if uniformly high. Very highly recommended!
Wonderful Collection 20. Dezember 2010

Format:Taschenbuch
Rebels Mavericks and Heretics in Biology is a first-rate collection of
stories about men and women who went against the tide in biology in the twentieth century.
The examples were chosen very intelligently by the editors, and the collection has a kind
of cohesion that one rarely finds in edited books. The cast of contributors is really
a whose-who of the history of biology, and the epilogue by Dick Lewontin really puts the
project into nice perspective. In conclusion, this is an excellent book that should be useful
to students - undergrad and graduate - in biology, history of science, and sociology of science.
I think it would make a great compendium for a course, and should be widely included in course
syllabi. Really a fantastic and original book.
