What on earth is a Whangdoodle? A "fanciful creature of undefined nature," it was also once the wisest, kindest, most fun-loving living thing in the world--until people stopped believing in it. When that lack of faith became widespread, the last of the really great Whangdoodles created a special land full of extraordinary creatures: furry Flukes, the sly High-Behind Splintercat, and the wonderful Whiffle Bird. But when an open-minded professor--the one adult who still believes in the Whangdoodle--joins forces with three children with active imaginations, they become an unstoppable team on a fantastic and sometimes terrifying journey to Whangdoodleland.

Readers who have explored Narnia, Oz, or Willy Wonka's chocolate factory will be thrilled at this new destination--a marvelous land that will inspire and stimulate creative and scientific minds. And who better to expose young readers to new ways of seeing, smelling, and hearing than Julie (Andrews) Edwards of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music fame? Her lively and clever style pulls readers along effortlessly; she, like the professor, is one grownup who can teach children never to close their minds to possibility. (Ages 9 to 12)

I was introduced to this book in the third grade when my teacher read it to us. I was facinated with the idea of traveling to places using you mind. The book takes you to many places in the lives of a young girl and her two brothers. It intrigues the imagination and that is a wonderful feeling. If you've ever wanted to just let your mind travel to places that no one has gone before, to a place of such majesty that is almost too wonderful to imagine, please, read this book.
The author of this book is more commonly known as Julie Andrews (you know, Mary Poppins). This book is the best, I still like to read it. She also wrote a book called Mandy, it is an awesome book as well. I just wish she had written more..

I had a teacher who read this book to our class when I was in fourth grade. I am now 30, and the book is still one of the most creative, entertaining books I have ever read. Lindy, Tom, Ben and the professor have the most wonderful adventures and meet up with the most incredible creatures. Julie Andrews Edwards has a gift for making the reader feel that she (or he) is actually along on the adventure. Her writing style is so descriptive, it's almost as if you can actually see, smell and taste all of the fantastic things in the book. This book truly recognizes the importance of exercising a child's imagination. I really look forward to reading it to my children someday.

I first discovered this book over 12 years ago when it was only available in hard cover while I was running the young readers section of a bookstore. We only carried one copy but after I had read the book myself I began recommending it to people who wanted something "really special" to give to children. Soon we had to keep 2-3 copies on the shelf to accomodate our customers. I have to admit I gushed about this book...it's one of the finest explorations of imagination I have ever run across (and since I have a personal library of over 10,000 books *besides* all the others I've read, I feel that I have a good perspective! <grin>). This was the first 'big' children's book that I read aloud to my own children (who where then four and two). They were enthralled. We read a chapter a night and the one time I was too sick to read, they *insisted* on *two* chapters the next night! I'm so glad that this book is now available in paperback so that more people can enjoy it...but I'm glad that I have my copy in hard cover because I know that it will be read many more times over the years! (hey! I've read it more than five times already myself!!) This is a classic that is suitable for all ages...except perhaps infants! <grin>

I first read "Whangdoodles" in 1977 when I received it as an eleventh birthday gift from my sister. Since then, it has become one of my favorite children's books which I have revisited countless times and shared with my nieces and nephews. "Whangdoodles" is a whimsical, fantastic adventure which underscores how a well-developed imagination can be a tool for discovering the important lessons of life: goal-setting, training, trust, teamwork, creativity, open-mindedness and determination.
Lindy, Thomas and Benjamin are three ordinary children who meet and are taken under the wing of the extraordinary Professor Savant. Together they discover a unique land filled with rare and wonderful creatures like the Slippery Prock, the High-Behind Splinter Cat, Tree Squeaks and Flutterbies. They take a ride on the Jolly Boat, cross trecherous terrain and face many challenges on their way to meet the reclusive Whangdoodle.
With the Professor's guidance, the children prove that preconceived notions can be a handicap, and that faith and perserverance can help one achieve nearly anything.
This book is right up there with "Edward Eager's "Half Magic" and E. Nesbitt's "Five Children & It."

Call me compulsive, but I read and re-read this book more than 20 times in my childhood. This book has a special place in my 400+ book library!
Ever since I read this the first time I have never seen spaces in hedges in quite the same light.

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles is about a professor who teaches 3 children the importance of imagination. Together, they travel to save the last surviving Whangdoodle, a creature that nobody believes exists in a land that nobody believes exists. Although I am older than the average reading age for this book, it is still one of my all-time favorites. The lesson that it teaches applies to adults, too, even more than it does to children. In this book, the professor opens up a wonderful new world to the children that they had never before known existed. Somebody once said, "You are born with wings. Why prefer to crawl through life?" These wings are your imagination, and Edwards does a wonderful job of portraying the blindness of the many people who choose to crawl through life. The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles means so much to me. It is my reminder of the joys that come with imagination and the frightening loss of it that, to different degrees, we all lose as we grow up.
