Pressestimmen

"At long last, we have the ideal text for graduate courses in social and behavioral science research methods. Robson's Real World Research does what no other methods text has been able to accomplish. It is a balanced presentation of qualitative research strategies that combines broad up-to-date coverage of approaches with a lively and engaging writing style. It effectively bridges research design and analysis with applications by providing the student with a tool-kit and criteria about when to use each of the techniques." Daniel Druckman,George Mason University.

"This is a most practical book, beautifully produced, which is intended for people who want to do or help others with small scale and field research... With its user-friendly explanations, diagrams and examples, this book gives them the necessary skills (how to draw up valid questionnaires and case studies, how to make the best of qualitative data, how to recognise a good research proposal) and background." Hannah Steinberg, Times Educational Supplement.

"The style is a treat: immediate and human in a way that will encourage the beginner; complex and rigorous enough to engage and inform the seasoned researcher."

"I cannot think of a better learning vehicle for students of research methods." British Journal of Psychology.

"His impressive range, his compendious and systematic knowledge and understanding of quantitative and qualitative methods, justifies the claim in his subtitle that his is a resource book for social scientists and many other practitioners too. Robson addresses the epistemological and methodological issues underpinning the practical methods at the same time as he sets them out so systematically and accessibly. The style is a treat: immediate and human in a way that will encourage the beginner; complex and rigorous enough to engage and inform the seasoned researcher. I cannot think of a better learning vehicle for students of research methods." British Journal of Psychology. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Synopsis

Though few students of psychology and related social or behavioural sciences go on to be laboratory-based experimentalists, traditional courses concentrate largely on the design and analysis of laboratory experiments. Many graduates do however go on to jobs where they are called upon to carry out some form of enquiry task outside the laboratory - often in complex, poorly-controlled situations. Practitioners and professionals working with people (eg. in education, health and the social services as well as in industry) are increasingly being required to be involved in similar studies. This new text gives advice and support in the carrying out of such real world research. The emphasis is on achieving rigour and trustworthiness in the enquiry through systematic procedures appropriate to the task. Particular features include an advocacy of multi-method case study as a serious research strategy alongside field experimentation and the survey; and an even-handed coverage of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Many real world studies are evaluations and their distinctive features are stressed.

A final section covers issues in "making an impact", including different approaches to reporting, the place of enquiry and promoting change, and the relative roles of practitioners and researchers. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Format: Taschenbuch
As the title suggests, this book is for researchers faced with 'real world' challenges like limited time, money and the need to address a presenting problem or issue. Its chapters cover everything from how to write a research proposal to getting your research published and acting on your findings. In between, the reader is offered overviews on different data collection and analysis methods covering quantitative and qualitative approaches. Pages 244-6 offer an example of a well set-out questionnaire - something that anyone who has ever sat down to design a survey has probably wished for.
Real World Research will suit people from a variety of disciplines including health, education and the social sciences who are looking for a book to guide them through the research process. Well written and easy to read, it is also comprehensive enough to suit the 'dabbler' who wants to learn about a particular methodology but doesn't want commit themselves to an entire book on the one approach.

This book a good alternative to the big hardcover issue of Robson. It is cheaper, easier to handle and offers all the insights to research models that aré required for scientific work. Suitable as well for nature science and for humanities.

I need a translator 22. September 2013
Von L. Rowe - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I wish my professor had choosen another book. This class I am in is an Intro to Research class, yet I cannot read make heads or tails of this book. Its frustratingly chocked with jargon that it should be teaching us and not assuming that the reader already knows. Perhaps that is the mistake. This book is more of an intermediate level book and not entry level. Either way, I am failing to comprehend what message it is trying to convey. Boring and completely not worth it.
Ick! Epitome of boring textbook. 27. Juli 2014
Von Amazon Shopper - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Ick! Epitome of boring textbook. Some concepts are explained in-depth, and some not so much. Many of the approaches to research don't include enough detail to allow students to fully understand how they differ from similar approaches and require readers to find alternate sources to fill in the details. The writing style leaves a lot to be desired. It is very dry, boring reading and it is very difficult to stay focused long enough to finish a chapter.

easy to understand 21. September 2012

This book is written so anyone can understand. The chapters are full of useful information that will stay with. Be aware the kindle version has no page numbers in the table of contents. The author is from England so most of his examples and websites are England based.
