Real World Adobe GoLive 5 is a big book on how to use Adobe's Web site authoring package to meet real design needs in the real world. This is not a take-you-by-the-hands class on GoLive, although it does cover application basics in the first section. Rather, it gives you solutions to real problems, and the authors expect you to have some familiarity with GoLive before you start.
The first of four main sections covers the basics: the interface, setting up GoLive preferences and how the program works. Section two is all about "Pages": the visual page editor, the text editor and everything you can do with both. "Sites", section three, covers GoLive's excellent site-management tools; and section four discusses advanced topics such as JavaScript, DHTML, cascading style sheets, and more.
The book is more like an extensive reference source than a tutorial. Virtually every feature is explained and can be looked up in the index, but you won't find a concise chapter on how to build an awesome site from a to b. This is the kind of book that you use as a desk reference, looking up topics as needed. Often, the examples cited are explained and illustrated more clearly than in Adobe's documentation.
One drawback is the lack of a CD-ROM. Examples, projects, source code, code snippets, animation--even a demo version of GoLive itself--would more than justify a CD-ROM. On the other hand, there are plenty of screen shots and sidebars.
GoLive 5 has matured into a powerful tool and has become a valuable member of the Adobe product family. Real World Adobe GoLive 5 is an important asset and reference book for the GoLive user. --Mike Caputo

After getting GoLive 5 for Windows, I played around with the program a little bit, but I soon realized that I needed some kind of "guide" to help me find my way through it. So I bought this book, and it's really great! For beginners, it introduces the GoLive basics. But there's even something in there for advanced users: JavaScript, DHTML, CSS and more!I like GoLive 5 for Windows, and I like this book. It also deals with the Macintosh version of GoLive, but I cannot comment on that, since I neither own a Macintosh, nor do I like them. Very very old and boring,

Well, yet another GoLive 5 publication can' t really impress me, because it's quite the same as Classroom in Book. OK, the printing quality is better. But what I was looking for is somebody who really uses GoLive 5 and not another author trying to change a GoLive 4 book into a ' brandnew' GoLive 5 publications. It passed so much time that I already know the differences between GoLive 4 and 5. Floating boxes are a cool tool, but need to be explained carefully. Smart Objects are very powerful and really speed up workflow, but telling me that they do exist is really not the right solution. I need to know how is the best way of using this smart objects. If the book is too similiar with Classroom I really DON' T need it. Furthermore I must deliver state-of-the-art designs and I must know all recent things on GoLive 5 in order to earn my living. Well, our Web design company is based on Power Macs running Mac OS X (10.0.3 to be exact) and only on very few PCs we have Win 2000. As Microsoft promised that Windows XP will need an activation key, we have no time for such stupid jokes ;-(, we decided to sustituted Windows NT by Mac OS X Server 2. The other motivation to abandon Windows is that Win 2K Server has only poor Mac support and is very unstable and easy to crack. The two NT / Win 2K Server have been to often down and have and uncredible hight TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).That's why we expect a GoLive 5 book to focus on Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server 2. That's what we Web designers are all using. But most made me angry is the fact that the author followed the original handbook of Adobe and explained the functions in easy snapshots. That's not OK, because I am cable of reading the program menus myself. What I really need is something smart. An authors who is capable to illustrate how the software works in real life. Yet another kind of "Classroom in Book" I really don't need and don't want! Furthermore the book is to old. Mac OS 8.x and Win 98 is something I don' t need.
