Ages 5-8. A gentle and affectionate tale set in the Caribbean. When his mother asks him to go to market to buy a fresh pot fish for supper, daydreamer Junjun wishes one would just appear. He closes his eyes, says "rata pata scata fata" three times. Opening them, he spies a fish (that's fallen from a passerby's basket) lying on the road. The pattern is repeated when Mother tells Junjun to find the goat (the goat finds him) and to pick the tamarinds (a strong wind blows, and the tamarinds "pick" themselves). The text is simple and direct, with engaging sound effects and repetition. The torn paper collages in bright tropical hues and filled with island ambience rhythmically echo the text. A most satisfying end is provided as Mother, skeptical but tired enough to try, sings the "magic words" and is saved a trip for water by a much needed downpour. Delightful in its own right, this title also provides an unobtrusive introduction to the lush flora and fauna of the Virgin Islands. Includes an informative author's note. Julie Corsaro

A sunny, well-shaped tale about little Junjun, who'd rather dream than do the tasks his busy mother asks him to do. Instead, he utters the eponymous ``Caribbean gobbledy-gook'' (explained in a note as ``an old-time Virgin Islands way of talking nonsense'') in hopes of magical results--and, by happy chance, is rewarded each time: A fisherman happens to drop a fish as he passes, so that Jumjum is spared a trip to fetch one; the goat turns up on its own; tamarinds fall before he must pick them. And each time Junjun has a playful explanation (``The fish got dusty when it swam across town''), while his interchanges with Mommy, however purposeful, remain relaxed and affectionate. Meade's torn-paper collages--rough, white-bordered areas of radiant tropical hues- -are the perfect complement to an engagingly cadenced story that will be just right for sharing aloud. I checked this book out for my duaghter at the library and we loved it so much I had to add it to our own library collection. The story and illustrations are simple but it is so sweet and a nice introduction to life on the caribbean. The reader can anticipate what Jun Jun will say (which young kids love) and the ending is clever and fun. It's also a great book to read if your at a stage of wanting to give your own little one some chores of his own.
