Burt, a fanatical photographer of seldom-seen birds, collects 16 years of work into a celebration of species that most bird-watchers have only glimpsed. His book is familiar to readers of Smithsonian or Audubon magazines, in which his photos have whetted the appetites of many readers. These 20 species all share one trait: difficult to see. Some, such as the rails and bitterns, are secretive marsh birds, skulking through narrow pathways in the reeds, calling out but seldom revealing themselves. Others, like the nocturnal nightjars, have perfectly camouflaged plumage. And some, like the yellow-breasted chat, live in inaccessible locations, so despite their bright colors they are difficult to have contact with. Burt's photographs reveal the subtle beauty of birds that most birders have seen only for a split second. The accompanying essays make light of the author's difficulties in finding and photographing the birds. Sprinkled with relevant quotes from Thoreau, Audubon, Seton, and others, his text is poetic and lyrical yet grounded by a scientist's eye for fact and an appreciation for place and history. Burt's epic, singular odyssey in the plains, prairies, coastal marshes, bogs, and woodlands are compellingly and entertainingly set forth. Not only pictures of elusive birds, but an adventure to boot

Taking picture of the most rare and shy birds in North America is not an easy tasking, not even for an avid birder and expert in the field. Well, William Burt is an expert in the field, and it took him over 10 years of hard work to research, track down, and photograph America's most elusive birds. Burt has not only delivered a full package of top quality photographs, but he has written an excellent story of his episodes of wandering through endless praries and dark swamps to find these birds. For anyone who loves birds, or loves an adventure, this book is a must.
