Kurzbeschreibung

A five-item sampler of strange and wonderful tales of fantasy and science fiction by Indiana author G. S. Hargrave, brought together by Black Griffin Books for the very first time. Inside you will find telepathic cats, robotic dogs, near future battlefields, dark Tibetan magic, genetic engineering, adventures in nanotechnology, the occasional haunting, and a cast of engaging and believable characters that will stay with you long after their final pages have been turned. Included are the following stories:
  • Doctor Ramani's Children: A modern-day genius on a mission to permanently alter what it means to be human - whether anyone else likes it or not;
  • BD-428: A soldier of the near future, whose survival depends on an ambulating piece of equipment that may have unexpectedly become sentient;
  • The Jade Cicada: An entomologist, who follows the lowly object of his studies across an unseen boundary and finds himself in some decidedly unfamiliar territory;
  • On Some Bright Stream: A particle physicist discovers that the price of understanding can sometimes be a quantum of pure horror;
  • Bibliophiles: In which one of the strangest aspiring writers you're ever likely to meet crosses paths with a mysterious antiquarian book, and a sinister character that is even stranger.
The printed version of this book runs 156 pages - over 40,000 words. The electronic edition has been optimized for all Kindle reading devices.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

G. S. Hargrave does most of his writing in a northwest Indiana lake cottage. His earliest published fiction, all in the mystery genre, first appeared in the United States, Germany, and Japan over 25 years ago. You can still find some of that if you look for it, but it's not always easy. These days he has turned his attention to science fiction and fantasy. He especially likes the places where the two overlap. The author is also an artist and an improvisational guitarist. The paints are usually oils, and the strings are usually nylon.

Mehr über den Autor

G. S. Hargrave, a native of Indiana, attended public schools there until 1966, when his family relocated to the West Indies. He completed his secondary education at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral School, Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1968, and enlisted in the Army midway through the following year. He spent all of 1970 with the 459th Signal Battalion in the Khanh Hoa Province of the former Republic of South Vietnam. After his discharge in 1972 he attended Indiana University, majoring in Fine Arts and Literature. He graduated with a BA from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1976.

The author's earliest published fiction, all in the mystery genre, appeared in the United States, Germany, and Japan through the 1980s. A lengthy hiatus from writing followed, which corresponded with an equally lengthy period of service to the federal government. Both ended in 2005. When the writing resumed, science fiction and fantasy seemed to come as naturally as mystery had previously.

The author presently lives and works in northwest Indiana. He's also a painter and an improvisational guitarist.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Superb collection 14. Dezember 2012
Von Steve Roach - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book a few days ago and within seconds of reading the first story I dropped everything to finish it. The book is stuffed full of inventive ideas and the writing is superb.

I find it hard to discover new writers that really impress me, and during 2012 there have only been a handful of books that have punched through my jaded pessimism and wowed me. This book is one of the few.

Superb.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Absolutely captivating 4. Oktober 2012

This book is fantastic. The writing is crisp, powerful and elegant. I really liked what I would call "near future" technical innovations- technical innovations that we are likely to see in the near future. All the stories are really interesting. Although they are short stories, due to the author's effective narrative abilities you get a picture of the characters very quickly and efficiently.
In addition to the very clever technology and fantasy elements, each story explored very interesting themes like the interrelationship between man and machines, what it means to have a consciousness, to mention just a few.
This was one of the best collection of fantasy/science fiction short stories I have ever read. I recommend this book highly to anyone who likes technology, science fiction and fantasy books. I give it an enthusiastic five stars. All the short stories in the collection are excellent.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Mindbending stories bring charm and culture to fantasy writing 30. September 2012
Von Ariana R. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This collection explores and redefines the fantasy genre while proving a hard book to categorize- blending technology, war, terminal illness, grief, and wonder. From genetically modified dragonflies to stories of man vs. machine, both mythical and realist characters spring to life in polished vignettes that show the exceptional talent of the author. The first story carries an instruction that you'll want to remember the rest of the book: "Loosen your focus on the outside world and let your mind drift" to the "seductive possibilities" in each tale, from the beautiful sparseness that defines the Jade Cicada, to the compelling story of bibliophiles coming face to face with legend. This is a graceful rendering of Eastern cultures, border-pushing science, and inexorable, eclectic little slices of life. "This was just the sort of day I would have surprised my reflection," says one narrator, in one of my favorite moments in the book. In less capable hands, the subject matter might seem obscure. But this collection ends up being invigorating and lyrical, something all readers can appreciate.

A very enjoyable collection of short stories. I'd particularly liked the dragonfly idea. Well conceived and executed. Will read more from this author.
