'a mix of Billy Connelly and Dr Spock ... Steve Biddulph is a publishing phenomenon' The Times 'Steve's advice is easy to follow - and more importantly, it works.' BBC Family Life Magazine 'When you find a guru willing to change his mind when evidence and humanity prompt, you rejoice. For me, Steve Biddulph - one of the most popular [parenting gurus] in the world, with four million books sold - is the man.' Libby Purves, The Times 'Biddulph... has a built-in feel good factor. Parenting books too often make one fell inadequate, but Biddulph's left me refreshed and optimistic.' The Express 'Packed full of pithy wisdom on what it is to move from boyhood to manhood and how to help your (not-so) little one on his way.' The Independent

A word of mouth bestseller which has become one of the best loved and most successful books in the parenting field from Australian writer and lecturer Steve Biddulph, who’s been called ‘a mixture of Billy Connelly and Dr Spock’ by The Times.

In this expanded and updated edition, Steve Biddulph shares and gives practical and honest advice to parents so they can recognise the different stages of boyhood and learn how to raise happy, confident and kind young men.

Boys need to be parented in a different way from girls with their own very special psychological and physical make-up. Home, society and education have failed boys badly – and these failures lead to unhappy men who cannot fully become happy, responsible, emotionally-confident adults.

While it is essential that boys spend more time learning about manhood from their fathers, Biddulph updates his classic to include helpful information for mothers and single mothers with baby boys.

This extended edition explores some important topics:
• How ADHD may be caused by stress in the first year of life.
• Whether boys should start school later than girls.
• Help for single mothers raising sons.
• How to choose a sport that does more good than harm.
• What we can do about boys and binge drinking.
• What science can tell us about teenage boys and driving – and how we can keep our sons safe.

Raising Boys offers parents real-life situations, thought-provoking insights, humour and help.

"Raising boys" maintains that there is a gender difference in raising children, and that boys especially need particular attention if they are to be guided towards a self-confident and happy adulthood. Biddulph first gives a general outline as regards the different stages of development in boys, and then especially turns towards problem areas as schooling (he maintains for instance that boys should generally be sent to school one year later than girls on account of their slower maturation in certain skills), sex education, single parenting and others. What I liked about his book was, firstly, the very caring and open way he addresses these issues, de-mystifying and generally encouraging his readers. He emphasizes the important role of fathers and also teachers and other possible male mentors for boys while not forgetting the mothers, especially those raising their sons without a father in the family. I also liked that Biddulph shows a realistic picture of the negative development a boy can take if there is no real mentoring in difficult stages of his growing-up while at the same time giving parents confidence that they can greatly influence this development. The book has certain limitations, as Biddulph stays on a rather superficial level as regards psychic realities and constellations. As it caters to a very Australian society background, European parents may also feel that their own reality is not really mirrored in the book. But on the whole it is thoughtful, encouraging and a good read for parents, relations and teachers of boys.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great book, but the ebook needs some formatting 19. Dezember 2012

The book is great but the formatting of the ebook is terrible. Text that is probably in boxes on the side of the page in the print version, is just inserted right into the middle of the normal text - well, okay, there is a thin line there, but it still is VERY confusing! Why not put it at the end of the chapter instead of the middle of a sentence? Doesn't look like a human was in control over the creation of this ebook. :/

I was very disappointed in this book. Honestly it felt as though it was written by a very close minded person. It focused so much on boys being sexual creatures from a young age that I was uncomfortable reading it. It had very little advice to give on topics other than having boys sleep with their hands over the covers and keep them out of dark places so they don't play with their private parts. eventually I stopped reading. Normally I share books however this one went to the recycling bin so noone else would be subjected to these views. Still on the lookout for a good book on being a single mom of a boy.

This is a very good book, it has help me understand a lot about why and what is going on with my boy, to prepare my self and him for the next steps in his life, conscious of what I'm doing and not just " hoping that I'm doing the right thing"

A Must Read, before your child is born ! It would help mothers and fathers prepare so much better. I was particularly thrilled with all the sections that dealt with school-related issues.

This book has been all I hoped for. It covers topics in detail with short relevant anecdotes. This book discusses the physiology of boys, their maturation during adolescence and the needs they face during each phase... to the practical outworking in areas such as schooling. Growing up without brothers, male cousins, and attending a girls' school, I am facing the unknown challenge of raising an adolescent boy. This book has significantly reduced the 'unknown' factor and given me more confidence to negotiate the years ahead. I will definitely be referring to it again in the future- and lending it to friends!

I really enjoyed this thought provoking and relevant book. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in understanding those gender differences that make us uniquely male or female. Thank goodness we're not all the same. Where'd be the fun in that?
