This novella was previously published, and well received, in Great Britain, where it is set. As a writer, Gunn is like a good surgeon, incising with her sharp, lyrical prose a grown woman's remembrance of a certain time in her childhood: the summer her younger brother died. In opalescent style, that summer is conjured: the family established at the lake, her parents spending most of their time partying, her mother's obvious preference for her son, and her own adulation of her brother and her need to protect him in the face of their parents' emotional, if not physical, absenteeism. But a lapse in her protection allows him to drown. This short piece is as taut as a violin string and just as finely tuned. Brad Hooper

The Coleridge quote "Water, water everywhere,/Nor any drop to drink" effectively describes the emotional landscape of Gunn's first novel, a fine literary debut. Gunn herself beautifully details the dangerous emotional depths that the novel's young narrator, Janey, must tread. Throughout the slender volume, Janey serves as lifeguard and surrogate mother to her younger brother, Jim. Despite their parents' neglect, the two enjoy their summer residence "where the lake is lapping into endless night, slipping away from us, always further and further, until even the dark sky is filled with stars and water." As in similar novels subtly rendering the horrors of childhood such as Rebecca Stowe's Not the End of the World (LJ 1/92), Janey is sadly not prepared to meet the challenges of deeper and darker adult waters-no matter how well she swims or how tenderly she loves her brother. Readers may not be prepared for this short read to end, but they will enjoy arriving there.

Under a hundred pages, but full of emotion and at times beautiful writing. You get a strong feeling for each of the characters and though certain events a fairly obviously foreshadowed the time when the true comes out is still quite powerful. Near the end I was actually uncomfortable with what was happening, cringing at what was happening, it isn't very often that I feel anything for characters in a book, but Gunn's writing brings them out nad makes it easy it identify with the them, and no more so than in the more difficult moments. A good book, well worth the 3-5 hours it may take to read.

"Rain" by Kirsty Gunn is a beautifully written and very intriquing. You almost feel like you're reading a poem. The language and word choice is very special and I found myself very captured by main character Janey. The connection between older Janey (the narrator) and young Janey is very strong and powerful. It's a wonderful tale of a dangerous childhood and certainly grips it's reader into Janey's world. It's full of emotions and feelings that very few people can fully identify with. A brilliant first novel.

The beautiful prose in which this story is written gives vivid images. The reader can feel the tears in the air that Janey is breathing.
