Das ist das erste Rails Buch, welches ich uneingeschränkt empfehlen kann. Und es ist nicht das erste, was ich lese :)
Es ist sehr angenehm geschrieben und liest sich ohne Verständnisprobleme, obwohl es auf Englisch geschrieben ist. Man muß kein Profi in der englischen Sprache sein, um es zu verstehen.
Durch den ständigen Vergleich mit einer korrespondierenden Lösung in PHP, wird Rails und Ruby sehr verständlich. Anfangs hatte ich mit diversen anderen Büchern Schwierigkeiten, in die Sprache hineinzufinden, da Ruby doch eine ziemliche Umstellung in der Notation gegenüber PHP, Java, C++, etc. mit sich bringt. Aber durch dieses Buch wird es wirklich verständlich gemacht und einleuchtend erklärt. Jetzt finde ich die Notation gar nicht mehr umständlich, sondern eher angenehm.
Durch das Buch hindurch wird eine kleine Anwendung erstellt und hier muß ich sagen, ist es auch das erste Mal, daß man der Erstellung der Anwendung ohne Probleme folgen kann. Bei vielen anderen Workshop-orientierten Büchern hatte ich oft Probleme, daß ich an einer bestimmten Stelle nicht weiterkam, weil entweder Fehler im Code waren oder Code-Teile so unverständlich und in unverständlichen Teilen eingefügt waren, daß man nicht genau wußte, was wozu gehört. Das ist hier ganz anders.
Auch didaktisch ist das Buch super aufgebaut. Es führt sehr verständlich und logisch aufeinander aufbauend durch das Framework.
Ich kann dieses Buch wirklich jedem ans Herz legen, der sich mit Rails beschäftigen möchte. Für mich ist es das beste Rails-Buch, was ich bisher in der Hand hatte.
Es ist natürlich absolut perfekt für Leute, die PHP beherrschen, aber ich würde sogar soweit gehen, zu sagen, daß es auch der optimale Einstieg für jemanden ist, der PHP nicht oder nur im Ansatz kennt.

Excellent resource for web development

This book is not only an excellent guide to Ruby and Rails for PHP developers, it is, quite simply, an excellent resource on professional web development. It offers insight into how to properly manage a product and customer expectations, from the planning stages to site delivery. I cannot recommend this book enough.

*The* Rails book to get if you're a PHP developer

This is one of the first practical books to be published that is entirely Rails 2.0 focused, but its real strength is in the terrific, direct comparisons to how to accomplish the same tasks in PHP. By directly linking specific features, functions, and other programmatic process in PHP to Rails, this book lets you learn something new (Rails) by revealing the similarities (and differences) with something you already know (PHP).
The author is clearly an expert PHP programmer, and while you will certainly come away with an appreciation for the elegance and parsimony of Ruby the programming language and Rails the web application framework, the book is by no means "down on PHP." Indeed, I learned a couple of PHP tricks, that let me do a few (simple) Rails-like patterns in PHP.
In all, this is a terrific book, and if you're a PHP developer interested in learning about Rails, this book is *the* way to do it.

Coming from a PHP background, this book makes it very simple to understand the Rails mentality and idioms behind the framework and Ruby itself. I really enjoyed the author's style and the way he brings up techniques. The flaw I've found is that there are small editing oversights, such as a variable name mistyped in one spot, but not another. Overall a great book which I highly recommend!
