In essays that challenge the nature of racial discourse in America, the director of Princeton's Afro-American Studies program, professor of religion, and self-described ``intellectual freedom- fighter'' calls for moral regeneration and profound social change. Scheduled to appear on the anniversary of the L.A. riots (when the nation presumably will take stock of America one year after), this collection (much of which appeared previously in The New York Times Magazine, Dissent, Z, etc.) is consistently effective at pointing out how the intellectual frameworks used by both whites and blacks as well as by liberals and (neo)conservatives impede true progress and understanding--whether the issue is affirmative action, black nihilism, or the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. West identifies the valuable insights of black conservatives while taking their conclusions to pieces and sees black anti-Semitism as threatening the ethical nature of the black struggle (if it ``becomes simply a power-driven war...that pits xenophobia from below against racism from above, then David Duke's project is the wave of the future''). While unsparing in his critique of black leadership and American racism, West situates the crisis in black America inside our market-driven culture, a world of ``random nows'' and the ``empty quest for pleasure, property and power''--a pervasive spiritual impoverishment that transcends race but is most devastating among the poorest, most powerless, and most despised. Aiming at accessibility, West perhaps too much curtails his customary intellectual range; but with clear thinking and sensible analysis being in short supply these days, his words are welcome nonetheless. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Most Americans agree that race matters. From the deep South to Los Angeles to the streets of Manhattan, where West futilely waited more than an hour for a cab to take him to the photo shoot for the book upon which this production is based, racism remains a stain on American society. In this unabridged recording of his book, West explores the psychic wounds of black nihilism, the misconceptions of black and white liberals and conservatives, the important role of sex in racism, and the redistribution of resources and of spirit that are essential for racial justice. He looks at contemporary black/Jewish tensions and offers insights into the views of Malcolm X. While a professional actor might have employed a more consistent vocal tone (the breaks between recording sessions are obvious), this is a minor point. For most collections.

Despite the book's age (published first in 1994), Cornel West provides a contemporary assessment of race relations in the United States, which is pertinent to race relations elsewhere in countries where black and white intersect. He does not propose easy, narrow or chauvenist black nationalist solutions to issues such as black people's place in politics, the economy or society, but suggest progressive solutions to a problem that plaques us at the beginning of the 21st century. It is an easy, accessible read on a complex issue.

This is an excellent critique of the current problems which exist in American culture as a whole and the black community specifically. Cornel West articulates his argument in a very concise and intellectually engaging way. This book is critical of both the right and the left, and I highly recommend it to both, the unique perspective and intelligent analysis of Cornel West are truly superb.

This is an excellent and concise analysis of many of the issues and problems facing the black community, and I would argue American society at large, today. Cornel West lays out his arguments in a very persuasive and intellectually stimulating way. After reading this book, I believe I have an answer to one question posed by Professor West, he asks: where are all the great black intellectuals of today, I would respond that I know of one of them and his name is Cornel West.

Harvard produced this!
Logic-chopping aside, this book leaves the impression that Cornel West loves himself as much as he hates America. And he really loves himself.
