Concluding volume of The Quintara Marathon trilogy (The Demons at Rainbow Bridge, The Run to Chaos Keep), this one galloping all over the alternate dimensions and told in three modes of internalized or telepathic nonverbal communication. Book One found the awakening from suspended animation of some nasty, taloned, horned demons who were affecting Earth culture as well as every society in the three galactic empires: The Exchange, the Mycohl, and the Mizlaplan. In Book Two, a scientific team sent by the Exchange was slaughtered by the demons, and small rescue teams from each empire pursued the monsters through an interdimensional gate. Here, the three empire teams forge into one team of five Terrans that has chased the demons of ultimate evil to a city of the damned on a desolate planet ruled by The Other, the master of the Quintara, an unseeable, mind-blocking creature ``at the heart of this horror.'' Even the demon princes are as dust specks compared to The Other. Will The Other--Baal--turn the present and future populations of the three empires into 90 trillion Fausts? Only the martyrdom of small, sandy-haired Irishman Jimmy McCray, who plunges a crucifix into the Evil One's chest, can save the nondemonic beings in all dimensions as we will know them--tomorrow? A v.good blend of science fiction and speculative theology.

The entire Quintara Marathon is one mind-bending, surreal escapade after another. The first book is devoted almost entirely to character development, the second to development of the plot... and the third is the big one. Although the climax is sometimes almost as hard to understand as the last ten minutes of the movie 2001, don't let that daunt you. This book has something for everyone. Space opera, science fiction, science occult, fantasy, and crisises of faith.... I thoroughly enjoy this sort of 'gestalt' and if you do as well, then I don't believe you will be disappointed. Some people might be squicked by some of the religious overtones (undertones?), or the Ultimate Nature of the universe (some of the characters are squicked, as well!) but taken in the light of the story, this concept adds greatly to the plotline. Besides, it's a rousing good read!

Excellent plot!

I have always been a fan of Jack L. Chalker. Most of his books have a similar theme, that of advanced alien civilisations that used to rule the universe. This trilogy though is different in that it provides a new twist to the familiar theme. Also his characters are well written, the philosophy is interesting, the plot is excellent and fast paced. Each of the three books has a unique flavour. Definitely a good read.

This is one of my all time favorite series. From Demons at Rainbow Bridge all the way to 90 Trillion Fausts, Chauker kept me completely captivated. The final ending was done so well, it made me want for more. I first started reading this series almost 20 years ago and could wait for the 2nd and 3rd books to come out. The way the space suits worked made hope that we could actually develop something like that in my lifetime.
