After living in Ovamboland for two years, I found this book bringing back memories of what life and community was like. It was a very real story that pulled on my heart reminding me of Namibia.
A story about women told plainly, yet beautifully

Ali is a woman with a great husband and family life - her hubby doesn't beat or cheat on her and he loves her very much. Unfortunately, a peaceful marriage is rare in this little village and in contrast to Ali, her best friend Kauna has a miserable life. Kauna's husband, beats her savagely and cheats on her with the "woman in the white house". Set in a small Namibian village, The Purple Violet of Oshaantu gives us insight into this African Culture, while sharing the universal struggles that women around the world face. It also reflects the strength and power that women have, especially when they work together. This book is not available on most book store shelves, but definitely worth the extra effort to obtain it. Good read.
