Kurzbeschreibung

They say everyone has a novel in them. Luca had five, until they were stolen from him.

Luca Pope would normally be pleased to see his novels on bookstore shelves, especially if it were his name on the covers. Five novels bearing five different author names, and he has no idea how it happened.

Unemployed and with nothing better to do than to entertain thoughts of violent retribution, Luca sets out to track down and corner the plagiarists, to extract answers and confessions - if they'd just stay alive long enough to oblige. Urged on by a sense of righteous outrage and an inner voice named Hodges, Luca departs his career of salaried apathy to pursue the life which has been brazenly stolen from him: successful novelist … or failing that, serial killer.

Punchline is a black comedy about plagiarism, paranoia, and one man’s poorly-judged attempts to out the bastards who stole his books.

Two wrongs don’t make a right … but five should do it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Weirdness in an entertaining kind of way 26. Oktober 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I've left it a few days after finishing the book before doing my review, but I am still having troubles getting my head round it.

Story was really odd. I don't think I ever really read the blurb, or if I did it was just the first line of it. I just didn't expect the way the plot turned. And funnily enough, instead of picking up my kindle and thinking along the lines of "oooh I wonder if there will be an end to the suspense and we will find the culprit" it was more like "I wonder what weird thing is going to happen to Luca today". I just thought it brought a different experience to the usual books. I thought it was great !

I absolutely loved the way the story was told as well. You're so inside Luca's head, and the story really is told like it is from his point of view. Found it really interesting knowing what goes on in a bloke's head, even though it was in obviously unusual situations!

A totally recommended read if you want to try something different. Bit of suspense, bit of humour and lots of weirdness make a wonderful mix !

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fast paced and exciting 26. Oktober 2011
Von Ignite - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This book is a fast moving adventure story with a high body count. The premise is that an author has all his previously rejected manuscripts stolen and published under other people's names. Naturally he is apoplectically angry. He tries to track his works and those who stole them and find out how they managed to get hold of the books. There are lots of interesting characters in this story and the ending is a real surprise. I love the author's sense of humour. Paul Fenton is a talented and funny writer.
The book is a real page turner and I enjoyed it immensely.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A noir crime thriller.. 8. November 2011
Von Cheryl M-M - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought it was a kind of noir crime thriller, a pessimistic downbeat air to it mixed with satirical humour. Quirky and fresh, definitely a book that readers who are looking for that edgy different type of story will like. The storyline is a struggling writers nightmare, someone has plagiarised his work and become an instant success. Luca starts hunting the thief down and on the way discovers things about himself he would rather not know. Some of the dialogue is brutally honest and that includes the colourful language the main character uses to voice his dissatisfaction.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An extraordinary voice, great writing 29. Juni 2013
Von Mark J. Welch - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The first few pages of this novel were interesting and well-written, easily carrying me along, but then I found myself pausing in awe. What genre was this? Where was the plot going? Why did it feel so awesome to read on?

The language, the dialogue, the freaky psychology, and the bizarre realism ... incredible. Most of the characters developed 'just right.'

I've observed (and complained) that film critics often rave excessively about movies that are about theater (stage, film), and I'm sure that my writing background made me an ideal reader for this novel about a writer.

What fascinated me was the way I felt myself drawn in one direction, then another, always enjoying the ride and forgiving the author whenever the shifts forced me to abandon and rebuild my expectations.

In the last part of the book, the plot steadied and became less satisfying, though the language and dialogue and asides continued to entertain me.

I want to read more by this author, even though I know that I'm certainly going to be disappointed because this book is pretty much unbeatable.

Comparing this author to Elmore Leonard is reasonable, yet unfair -- this is even more original (even when being intentionally derivative).

Like an Elmore Leonard novel, this book could be adapted into a great movie (or easily into a bad movie) but no film could capture the real flavor of the book.

Just read the book. It is great.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Well, okay I guess 31. Januar 2014
Von The Bionic Stan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I initially reviewed this on the basis of my Kindle download. The formatting was so badly messed up that I literally couldn't read the book. I downloaded it a second time and, as promised, I'm updating my review.

The formatting is better now -- I'd rate it as "irritating" rather than "unreadable". Most page-turns are marred by either several omitted words or several repeated words, so most page turns break my flow. This may be one reason why the book seems to move slowly, which is not a good quality in a thriller. (UPDATE: Weirdness! Now the formatting seems okay. There are actual page breaks for chapters, ans the problem I noted with multiple words duplicated at a page turn, or multiple words omitted at a page turn -- those problems seem to have gone away. I can't account for this. This is about my tenth Kindle book, so I don't think it was user error.)

This was okay. Our narrator was fired from his job as an investment banker, but he wasn't too upset because his first love was writing. He discovered, however, that his five unpublished manuscripts, which had garnered lots of rejections, had all been published recently by first-time authors. Various stuff happens, but the book felt slow moving. Things seemed to move faster at around the 75% point, but the big reveal just came out of nowhere and was frankly unbelievable in terms of what had gone before.

With the formatting problems disappeared, I give this three stars. It's okay if you want to kill time, but I don't see myself ever reading it again or seeking out other works by this author.
