He is an experienced infrastructure architect with a background in Linux/Unix, AS/400, Windows, and Storage systems. Dieses Buch gibt einen netten Einstieg in die Welt des Konfigurations-Managements mit Puppet. Leider ist es nicht optimal strukturiert und Kapitel wie die Erweiterung von Puppet um eigene Typen lassen Details vermissen. Zu häufig wird auf das Wiki verwiesen, das die Entwickler von Puppet für die Dokumentation verwenden. Auch fehlen einige Erklärungen, warum ein vorgestelltes Skript oder Konfigurations-Segment das tut, was der Author will. Mechanismen im Hintergrund sollten besser erklärt werden. In Teilen (z.B. bei virtuellen Resourcen) fehlt ein Überblick, wie genau diese verwendet werden sollen.
Vergleicht man das Buch gar mit den frei erhältlichen Dokumentationen zum Alternativprodukt cfengine, so fällt es leider ganz durch.
Auf der positiven Seite steht der Schreibstil des Authors, der sich relativ gut lesen lässt. Außerdem bietet das Buch einen strukturierteren Überblick über Puppet, als dies im Wiki der Fall ist. Puppet, being a great tool for system administrators, unfortunately suffers, at least in my opinion, from a lack of good documentation. Sure, the wiki at reductivelabs.com has a good amount of information, but it is neither easy to read, nor complete and the structure is not suitable for learning the ropes.
Does this book fill the gap? Only partially. What struck me at first was the complete lack of an index. The index in 'Red Hat RPM Guide' is of poor quality, but still better than none at all. Very often the author references to the wiki at reductivelabs.com for further reading and more details. I really would have liked more depth in the book. Especially a more extensive coverage of the various types, functions and configuration items used by puppet, including samples, would be in order, possibly in a separate chapter. Even if this meant duplicating much of the information in the wiki, it would avoid having to switch back and forth bewteen the book and the online reference.
On the bright side, Turnbull's writing style is easy to read. What is covered in the book mostly is explained by showing a sample followed by text explaining what's going on in the sample code. This makes it easy for newcomers to follow along. This covers mainly the basics plus some first steps beyond. I'm sure with puppet you can do much more, but here we're on our own again.
If you are new to puppet, get the book; it will help you get up to speed more quickly than the wiki. If you have puppet up and running with basics only, you might get some ideas from the book on how to get beyond the basics. If you are a slightly advanced puppeteer already you'll probably not gain anything from reading this book.
I'm still waiting for a good book on puppet, but meanwhile this is probably the best you can get and thus it gets a small bonus in my rating simply for the fact of being available.

I liked what was in this book. It's a good overview of what puppet can do, with examples.
The one thing that's missing, and it's driving me crazy is that it doesn't have an index! That's maddening for a reference book. In a perfect world, I'd like to see some more best practices and some suggestions for how to transition running machines on to puppet.
Overall, a 'buy', but bring your own sticky notes to mark important pages...

If you are completely new to Puppet, you should definitely buy this book. It does a good job of walking through the basics of automating your data center. I would have liked to see some more in-depth examples, but the topics covered were fleshed out enough that I could figure it out on my own.
I have a major complaint about this edition, however: when it comes to technical books, published code should ALWAYS be tested. It should be taken as absolute fact that the code published in a reference manual will function correctly and do what the author claims it will do. That's not the case here. For example:
On pg. 116, the author creates a resource of type
"apache::apache_files"
But in the definition for "apache:apache_files" ON THE VERY NEXT PAGE it reads:
define appache::apache_files ...
with two 'p's. It's clear that this code could never have been tested, because it wouldn't work!
But the author does demonstrate a thorough understanding of the subject matter, and I will probably buy "Pro Puppet" when it is released. But I sincerely hope the code is tested (or the editing is improved).

EXCELLENT 'physical' resource for Puppet

This book walks you through everything Puppet-related - from setting up the puppetmaster, to creating your first class, to scaling and tuning puppet. I've got tons of sticky notes in my copy that I refer to at least a couple of times a month (now 8 months into a district-wide puppet rollout). Yes, there's not an index - but the sheer content/info in the book makes it a must-buy for anyone who wants to begin with Puppet.
Puppet is now well into version 0.25.4, but the information in this book is still pertinent in many ways. I would love to see an updated version, though!
