Lynn Hagen expands on the Zeus Pack series with her latest addition, "Bald Eagle". She currently has several series she builds upon, all interrelated. Zeus' Pack follows a pack of grey wolf shifters who find themselves each having *two* mates, forming menage relationships.
The members of Zeus' pack all suffered under the hands of their previous Alpha... the sadistic and twisted Jackson. These soldiers were tortured and forced to do horrible unspeakable acts designed to break their will. Nobody suffered as much as Eagle though. While all soldiers were tortured, he would also be tortured for others' transgressions. "If you don't follow my orders, watch what I'll do to Eagle. It'll be on your head." When Zeus challenged and finally killed Jackson, he was left with seriously emotionally-damaged soldiers, but none more damaged than Eagle. And herein lies the crux of the dilemma in this story.
Chey is a relatively new Beta in the pack, a brother of one of the members. His beta ability is that he can not only heal physical wounds, but heal psychic wounds as well. When a shifter comes in contact with him, he's forced to relive traumatizing events as a means of coming to term with them. Chey also experiences this reliving, and tries to help guide and support his patient through the process. The problem is that Eagle is so traumatized by what he went through, he's not sure he can relive those events. He also definitely does not want Chey to experience those events either because it would be incredibly painful for Chey. This is incredibly hard on both of them since they are mates, but can't touch each other. They feel the love and desire for each other, but Eagle is not emotionally ready to face his nightmares, and this love and desire is pushed aside, to the pain and sadness of them both.
Enter Dr. Maximus Samuel, a physician at the local hospital who meets both Eagle and Chey. As a shifter himself, he instantly recognizes both as his mate, and precipates events that will eventually force Eagle to face his greatest fears.
Emotions run particularly strong in this story. The characters are well-developed, interesting, and unique. The reader is eventually exposed to Jackson's depravity, and it's an emotional journey that is a bit more fulfilling than what is normally expected in these serial novels. There is also an ongoing plot that is given a little more attention that involves external evil forces, furthering events that transpire across all of the series. All in all, it's a very rewarding, interesting, and enjoyable tale. If you enjoy the shifter series, you should like this one.
