“A fast paced thriller that I literally couldn't put down. I will definitely be checking out the other Andrew Mayne titles on Kindle.” - Robert Gemienhardt

“I think it's the mark of great sci-fi that despite the imagined elements that drive the plot, the characters and the situations feel real. Public Enemy Zero accomplishes this beautifully.” - Jeremy Lusk

The book follow the misadventure of a common man that find himself being attacked by everyone he comes in contact with. Until here nothing out of the normal. But even in the beginning you can feel a nice and continuous story that keeps you hook all the book long. Its a mix of the history, narrative style and authors panache.

While simple in the start the story takes everyday person and makes him a everyday survivor. In some moments as the feeling of a zombie story. At some other is a humor streak and all wrapped in a continuous chase between the Mitchell Roberts and every human across Florida. But that is just the beginning. Little by little the history unfolds. At some points you recognize that the author has struck gold with the history. Could be better, yes it could. Is the book n the top 98% of what I read last year, for sure.

Mitchell Roberts the main character is kind of cute and well defined. The evils that await him are round but short described. More often than not their actions told us the history.

Five starts for the fun of the reading, the time that feels like nothing while you are reading it and a good written book.

The author, Andrew Maine, has two more books that I cannot wait to start to read: The Chronological Man: The Monster in the Mist and The Grendel's Shadow .

HASH(0x93509708) von 5 Sternen A Readable Thriller that Could Have Been a 5 23. Juni 2011
Von Danny Norbury - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Since I bought my Kindle, I have dabbled in several self published authors with mixed results. It is always a crap shoot but at a $.99 and a handful of good reviews, I am willing to broaden my horizons to these uncharted isles.

And I am so glad to have discovered Andrew Mayne.

With Public Enemy Zero Mayne expertly handles a very original take on the whole X-Factor Zombie type of scenario. He begins by creating a very likable, morally centered everyman. Mitch is an aspiring broadcaster working the long nights at the wrong end of the radio dial. His girlfriend just broke up with him, he has under a grand in his checking account, and...oh yeah, he just found out that anyone he comes in contact with becomes snarling animals hellbent on ripping him apart.

From there, Mr. Mayne spins a fast paced thriller that reads better than most summer blockbusters. By placing his character in the very real dangers of being captured by police as a terroist suspect, being ripped apart by anyone he meets, or being captured by a shadowy government agency, we get a thrilling ride that you will rip through in a single sitting.

Unfortunately, there are a few items that keeps Public Enemy Zero from full marks. There is a rather unnecessary and rather silly use of an LSD Wild Man who communes with Mother Nature in a plot to destroy the world. While it is an interesting piece of theater, this charcter and the handful of scenes he has (including, unfortunately the opening one) serve no purpose to the story and takes away from the realism of the situation.

There are two police detective characters that are strongly portrayed who begin unraveling the mystery who are ommitted in the second half of the book. And finally, there are huge glaring editorial errors in the last third of the book; sentences have repeating words, the wrong word choice is used, multiple pronouns appear side by side. Mr. Mayne states in his Acknowledgements that the book was edited with social networking volunteers. He would be better served paying someone to fill this role.

The last concern I have for the book is that it is so timely that I wonder how it will stand the test of time. Not only are there multiple references to YouTube, Skype, i-Pads, etc. but they and Facebook/Twitter play a central role to the plot. I found this to be very clever and applaud its use, however, future readers or current readers unfamiliar with these technologies might be less impressed.

I will read everything that Mr. Mayne has out for the Kindle. But with a few edits, omissions, etc. I would probably find him published in my bookstore or even on the silver screen as well.

HASH(0x92c81be8) von 5 Sternen Great story, great read. 7. Juli 2011
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Andrew Mayne really is a surprisingly good writer. The story is well thought out and executed, this is definitely not your average cookie cutter 'rage virus scenario'! I certainly want to read more tales from this particular universe. Andrew's writing style is developing and lacks the 'cheap' feeling that a lot of self published authors have. Another couple of books and it will be indistinguishable from career author.

Personally, I would have liked to have engaged with the main character a bit more, felt a bit more of his anguish at the unfairness and the desperate nature of his situation, but I feel that the suspense and action sequences more than made up for this. That sort of navel gazing may well have slowed the book down, but it would have fleshed the extremely capable Mitch out a bit.

I can quite easily see this as a movie. I'm hoping it gets optioned so that there is a chance to see this someday.

In short, well worth the time it takes to read and worth considerably more than the asking price.

Ever considered a collection of Weird Things Scenarios as short stories, Andrew?

HASH(0x930156e4) von 5 Sternen Interesting plot, poor literary quality 16. März 2012
Von Greg T - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I found the basic plot and outline of the book to be intriguing. There were a number of interesting escape concepts. However, the grammar, syntax and overall literary quality needed a great deal of improvement. One example:

"The windshield was cracked from when the impact sent the cars in the carrier into the air, bouncing into the ceiling."

Ouch.

From the sales ranking and subject material, I was happy to give this one a shot. I have to admit I was a little disappointed. Although the concept is an interesting one, I don't believe the author is polished enough to really give this story a proper telling (and I don't just mean the AWFUL editing--misspells, missing words, etc.) There are LONG expository passages dealing with the intricacies of stealing a boat, breaking into a house, etc, which aren't vital to the plot and sloooooow the reading down to a crawl. This (to me) reads like a first attempt/first draft, and as such was really difficult to get through. I'd give Mayne another shot if I like the topic of one of his novels, but I'll give the free preview a close eye to before I spend any money, even 99 cents. I suggest you do the same.

HASH(0x92d6f348) von 5 Sternen Like the main character, I could not stop. 15. November 2011
Von Paul J. Furio - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I picked this up looking for something to start reading during a lunch break, and I found myself flipping through a few more pages on my iPhone in the bathroom, then on the bus home, reading over dinner, and then finally settling in with a glass of wine to finish it out.

It's a bite-sized story, several hours of non-stop entertainment that's fast paced and incredibly clever, while remaining plausible in the context of the tale. Everyman is suddenly and violently attacked by people around him, and needs to run to survive. Meanwhile, an incredulous public fears him, authorities hate him, and a few dark people want to kill him.

What makes the story work is both the pacing, and the clever ways the main character gets away by the hair of his neck. Picture Bruce Willis in Die Hard, only over several days in south Florida, with murderous mobs chasing after him, and a shady bioweapon conspiracy arching over the whole thing, and you've got a non-stop action fest that will pleasantly surprise and thrill.

The writing isn't Hemmingway, but then it's not supposed to be. It's the next Roland Emmerich film, in easy Kindle Book format, and it's a bargain at twice the price.
