Komplette Starthilfe für die Ruby-Welt 26. November 2004

Ein dicker Schinken mit allem, was man als absoluter Neuling wie auch als Fortgeschrittener braucht, um sich mit Ruby in einer Umwelt von Web, Shells, UNIX, MS Windows und vielem mehr durchzuschlagen. Sehr gut strukturiert, nach dem Prinzip, das Wichtigste zuerst, mit Übersicht, Tutorial-artigen Kaptieln, Grundkonzepten, ausführliche Beschreibungen der Standard-Library und nicht zuletzt die Links, um auf dem Web noch zu erfahren, was auf 800 Seiten nicht mehr reingepasst hat.
Für Neulinge hilfreich und motivierend wäre noch ein Kapitel gewesen, welches nützliche Anwendungsfälle für den Alltag im (Heim-)Büro oder in der Software-Entwicklung zeigt und beschreibt, wie man kombiniert mit Scripts (am besten Unix Scripts...) flexible Lösungen zusammenbaut.

This is one of the worst programming books ever written. I bought this book after reading the excellent "The Pragmatic Programmer" by the same authors and I could not be more disappointed.

As every introductory book for a programming language it is quite redundant for experienced programmers, but I don't even count that as a negative point. The book seems very unorganized and the choice of example code is ridiculous. Most of the book they are trying to implement a Jukebox. That would be nice if Ruby had built-in sound capabilities. But a text simulation of a Jukebox is among the most boring examples anyone could think of.

I couldn't finish the book and only used it as a reference from time to time. It seems like the authors wanted to make a quick buck, living off their "Pragmatic Programmer" fame.

The only good thing about this book (if you like Ruby) is that it contributed much to the Ruby hype in the western world. The first edition is available for free online and that's good, because it is not worth a penny.

Dieses Buch hat einen festen Platz auf meinem Schreibtisch und wenn es nicht so groß und schwer wäre, dann würde ich es immer mit mir herumtragen. Hier wird (fast) alles beleuchtet: Core- und Standard-Library. Der Test ist locker geschrieben und das Englisch für einen Nicht-Muttersprachler gut verständlich.

Wem ein solcher Lese- und Programmierstil zusagt, sollte sich unbedingt die anderen Bücher der "pragmatischen Programmierer" David Thomas und Andrew Hunt anschauen.
