Kurzbeschreibung

Updated for OS X 10.9 Mavericks, iOS 7, and Xcode 5

Programming in Objective-C is a concise, carefully written tutorial on the basics of Objective-C and object-oriented programming for Apple's iOS and OS X platforms.

The book makes no assumptions about prior experience with object-oriented programming languages or with the C language (which Objective-C is based upon). Because of this, both beginners and experienced programmers alike can use this book to quickly and effectively learn the fundamentals of Objective-C. Readers can also learn the concepts of object-oriented programming without having to first learn all of the intricacies of the underlying C programming language.

This unique approach to learning, combined with many small program examples and exercises at the end of each chapter, makes Programming in Objective-C ideally suited for either classroom use or self-study.

This edition has been fully updated to incorporate new Objective-C features and technologies introduced with Xcode 5, iOS 7, and Mac OS X Mavericks.

“The best book on any programming language that I’ve ever read. If you want to learn Objective-C, buy it.”—Calvin Wolcott

“An excellent resource for a new programmer who wants to learn Objective-C as their first programming language—a woefully underserved market.”—Pat Hughes

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great book but many issues with formatting 4. Januar 2014
Von Becksen
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The book is great and has deserved 5 stars.
It is easy to follow with good explanations and exercises and well strctured. The best book that I've read regarding Objective-C programming.
But as the formatting especially with formulas and signs like +, -, *, / and brackets does not work and confuses a lot while try to follow the examples it only gets four stars.

It is also a pitty that the answers to the exercises are not available anywhere. In the official forum there is not category for 6th edition of the book :(

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent book for learning Objective C 20. Dezember 2013

A lot of examples in the book illustrating the concepts of object oriented programming in Objective C. You do not need to have prior programming experience to understand the concepts. A little bit of C programming knowledge would certainly help, but not necessary. This book is designed for people without programming experience. I strongly recommend readers to try out all the examples using a Mac computer running Xcode 5. You would have more pleasant learning experience. If your goal is to do iOS programming for iPhone/iPad/iMac, this is a good book to start.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent resource for learning Objective-C 19. Dezember 2013
Von L. Aslan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

As a Mechanical EngineerI knew FORTRAN and C very well and had dabbled a little in C++. When it came time to write iOS apps, I knew I had to clear the hurdle of learning Objective-C and it's syntax before any of the sample iOS code I was looking at made any sense.

This book was (and the previous edition) a great way to clear that hurdle. I spent about a month working the exercises in the book in my spare time. The last chapter of the book has you bringing all of what you had learned together to make an iOS app (fraction calculator) and expanding it's capabilities a little by little.

Shortly after completing the exercises I was able to write a couple of rudimentary apps on my own. I can now focus on the features of the app, and leverage what I have learned from this book to execute what I have in my head so to speak.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great book for a an experienced developer looking to learn Objective-C 15. März 2014
Von Sean M Beanland - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I'm a C#/.NET developer and this was a great introduction to Objective-C. Everything is explained very clearly, and the hands-on examples, while simple, did a good job of getting me familiar with the concepts and getting the muscle memory for typing a language whose syntax often felt very odd compared to C#. The exercises expanded on what was talked about in the book and help solidify what was discussed.

For a new programmer, I guess I can't say one way or the other if this would be a good way to start. I think I would have struggled mightily with the object-oriented concepts, and would have had zero idea of how to debug my typos. Speaking of which, I only encountered one typo in the provided code. The forums for the book haven't been updated for the 6th edition, but I was still able to find the solution to the typo there.

I mostly used this on the Kindle for Mac app, and found the layout of the code examples to be pretty poor. It looks great on the Kindle iPad app, so I'm not sure why the experience would be so different. Fortunately, they've included jpeg versions of sample code you can view if the mangled code layout is too difficult to parse.

This is the first technical book of this type that I've completed start to finish, and that was solely due to the quality of the writing, explanations, and code examples. I really can't recommend it enough.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Book, but you should Know..... 27. August 2014
Von Andrew L. Valdez - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This book is awesome. You can tell Mr. Kochan is a no nonsense sort of person, or at least his teaching style is. He's very much in key when it comes to teaching nothing but the objective C language. I began reading the Big Nerd Ranch guide 2nd edition and progressed to 23 chapters before looking here. It's funny because every time I was confused, I used the 3rd edition guide by Kochan to answer some of my questions....then I realized I should be reading this book! I was skeptical at first because the book didn't seem as inviting as the BNR guide but the information was right to the point and succinct.

Mr. Kochan said something that I highly appreciate looking back now(by that I mean after reading most of the BNR guide): 1. is "I am going to teach you the objective-C language, .....not iOS or the frameworks or anything else, the focus is the language".
For you new OBJ-C programmers, I am telling you now....this is what you need. In the BNR guide, it's an excellent resource but Aaron Hillegass tries teaching you the C language first, then objective-c..... not too mention that the exercises in the BNR guide require a good amount of outside research, iOS design and many other aspects all in the confines of only a couple hundred pages. That's why there's so much to learn in any given chapter. I especially didn't see the need in learning C first, not that it isn't helpful but rather the little we did learn was only enough to confuse you because you don't become proficient in C you just learn its basic syntax which apparently OBJ-C is built off of...(I didn't feel so necessarily, but anyway).....I will say that in the BNR guides defense that it's a little simpler introduction but there's a point in that book that goes from 60 to 150mph in two pages....and believe me the challenges can get insane. I like the challenges in this book because their directly built off of whats learned in the chapter and more than that I enjoy them.

It's unfortunate because people here are rating this book at 2-4 stars because they can't download it (which is a systems problem not the authors) or because it doesn't teach iOS programming. Mr. Kochan says that explicitly in the preface of the book which can be downloaded free in sample form! I am not saying this book is perfect or isn't challenging, it is, but from a programmers perspective I Know now what I needed and it's in this book.

I wish in fact he hadn't talked about iOS programming period and maybe explained some more advanced Objective-C principles but it was still a good intro. The truth is objectiv-c and it's cocoa frameworks is 40 years in the making, there is so much to learn....I'd rather have the foundation to a home rather than a complete shack. I hate to sound like a BNR hater because I did learn quite a bit but not in comparison to this book. Objective-C is hard, challenging, and can be annoying at times but once you learn the language it's fun and you'll find your self spending hours on it. Believe me.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Nuff' said.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very well written! 10. Januar 2014

This book is absolutely perfect if you are completely new to objective-c programming. It explains everything in an understandable way, but at the same time in depth. The examples in the book are great to get a better understanding of what the different concepts.
I am not finished reading it yet, but has been interesting all the way to page 70. All of the information are relevant for the basic understanding. The book does not explain stuff before you have learned all the stuff required to understand it, and not before it is necessary to know it.

Summary: Great book for beginners!
