Kurzbeschreibung

JavaScript is the language of the Web. It has an intuitive, accessible nature and is available with most modern browsers. JavaScript is used for making dynamic, interactive web pages - from form validation to creating games to dynamic menus - but its uses also go much further. Hardly a single commercial web page exists today that does not contain some JavaScript.

This second edition of Professional JavaScript provides comprehensive coverage of the JavaScript language, its syntax and uses. We look at the latest web browsers and web standards, and move on to examine practical techniques in the form of short examples and more in-depth and complex case studies. This book will focus entirely on the use of JavaScript within the web browser, since this is predominantly where it is used.

This book covers

  • Core JavaScript programming
  • Scripting browser objects
  • Working with multimedia
  • Web standards, including XML, CSS, & W3C DOM
  • Dynamic HTML
  • Debugging techniques
  • Regular expressions and form validation
  • Real world case studies
  • The ECMAScript Edition 4 proposal

  • Synopsis

JavaScript is the language of the web, used in programming all the major browsers. It is a powerful scripting language that lets web developers produce more powerful, more user-friendly and more interactive web pages, and with the release of the Version 5 browsers its power will become even greater. JavaScript is not just for client-side, however; it's increasingly finding favour as a server side programming language- in Microsoft's ASP technology- and as a programming language for administration tasks with applications such as the Windows Scripting Host. This book covers the broad spectrum of programming JavaScript - from the core language to browser applications and server-side use to stand-alone and embedded JavaScript. It includes a guide to the language - when where and how to get the most out of JavaScript - together with practical case studies demonstrating JavaScript in action. Coverage is up-to-date, with discussion of compatability issues and version differences, and the book concludes with a comprehensive reference section.

I've got a real problem with this traditional-computer science approach of learning all about variables and structure but nothing that you can actually use.

I had to actually RETURN this book, because it was such a waste. Little examples or real code, make it only good in "theory" and not in practice. You can do MUCH better.

Look, books don't seem to be doing a very good job. If you want to learn Javascript, goto Yahoo.com and search for Javascript tutorial. I've just tried a few, but in an hour or two I've learned 20x as much as trying to read the book.

I found that wrox books are quite informative, and being a web professional, these are the kind of books that you want to buy. If you are a web monkey and don't have any education of the art of programming however, you really won't grasp the concepts that are presented in this book. It's not meant to be a code source book, that you can find in the javascript reference. This is to fully understand the concepts of JavaScript.(aka livescript for those of you in the know) Again, if you are a professional, this would be a great book for you. If you are a beginning programmer however, you might be better off getting a sams teach yourself book. start with the blah blah in 10 minutes. then get the 24 hours. 21 days is a waste. When you are at that point then come to wrox and get the real book on the language.

Ordinarily I'm a BIG fan of Wrox books, but this one let me down. Like many other reviewers, I was stopped too often by poor grammar, unintelligible sentences, and just plain wrong information. That this book ever made it to publication is an indictment of the Wrox editorial staff. Don't buy the book if you want to understand Javascript. In fact, don't buy it at all. I'm returning my copy (if I can).
