In 1824, James Hogg published one of the first great psychological novels. The "Justified Sinner" is a Scots Calvinist who comes to believe that no action of the elect is a sin. To put it another way, his theology drives him mad.
Or does it? He insists that a young gentleman led him into some of the evil he does and that the worst of the actions attributed to him are not performed by him at all. Is the "Justified Sinner" mad or has the Devil lured him into sin and even taken on his shape at times? This novel is a forerunner of works like Stevenson, THE STRANGE CASE OF DOCTOR JEKYLL AND MISTER HYDE and of James, THE TURN OF THE SCREW.

first of all, my professor said hogg should have sticked to his poems. dont know any of these but still his book is.. duh. that it was written 200 years ago is not the great turn off for me but its meticoulous style and the fact that anyone acquainted with mans seduction by satan will not be surprised by the outcome made it a rather boring read.
still, the way hogg does change his style when he does change perspective is gorgeous. the memoirs also give a great image of hoggs contemporary scotland.
for anyone interested in literary studies or put off by a predictable plot - definitely worth reading.

Much time ago I have thougth religion is a weapon of double edge - perhaps between others-. This is clearly seen in this novel although some other books, but usually posterior, shows a resemblance. From a Catholic point of view this novel is even more strange: a Calvinist man, undoubtly not very equilibrated is convinced that he can't commit a sin because his religion assures him the eternal salvation. From these premise and if you are stiff enough, the conclusion is clear: the man arrives to believe he can commit all classess of crimes withouth punishment. Of course, for me, the protagonist is simply a mad, and probably many people has been dragged to such foolishness when they pretend to figth with ideas that surpasses his capacities as all indiscriminate believers in anything or as a man who drives a car too fast for his ability. Biographies of great thinkers abound in mental disequilibrium. James Hogg wrote very well such a case in advance of his times.
