Morgan and her fiancee Miach, the Archmage of Neroche set out to find a way to cap a well of evil.
In tow they've got their loving, but sometimes annoying, relatives and friends.
Miach is notorious as a thief of other wizard's spells and the mages are generally stingy in sharing knowledge and spells, so Morgan and Miach have to steal the knowledge they need. But how will they be able to breach the defence of a keep filled with mages?
Plus: a very sweet romance, a magical world filled with amazing spells and creatures.
Minus: the heroes seem very unprofessional and ineffectual. Miach and Morgan are hunted and haunted by a number of enemies - some of whom they actually defeated in battle before and then simply set free. It seems exceedingly foolish simply to set your enemies and known criminals loose to stab you in the back again. That's what prisons are for - it would not be neccessary for the heroes to kill them and stain their souls. Or alternatively in a world with so much magic dangerous criminals could instead be magically contained or drained of magic to negate their threat as Droch demonstrated.
Morgan was described as a professional and dedicated soldier and swordwoman in the first book. Yet though she is frequently waving about her sword and knives, when push comes to shove she mostly ends up as the damsel in distress who needs to be protected and rescued by her menfolk.
I do not object to women incapable of taking care of themselves and with no interest in learning being protected by their men. But I dislike the message this book sends - even if a woman has spent her life learning to fight she is still less capable than the men.
