Pick this book up, start reading, and I guarantee: you won't put it down until you're finished!..and then you'll run out the door and be hunting for the 2nd book in the series, The Gods of Mars, and then # 3, The Warlord of Mars, and on through the series. Be warned: make sure you have access to #'s 2 and 3 before you start The Princess...you'll be sorry if you don't!

I first read the Burroughs Martian novels(there were 10 known to me then) as a graduate student studying Physics, some 40 years ago. They provided the perfect escape from the rigors of courses like Quantum Mechanics and E & M. Now I reread them,and I continue to enjoy. You will too.

John Carter ist ein ganzer Kerl. Captain der Konföderationsarmee, dennoch von den Sklaven geliebt und verehrt, unsterblich oder zumindest sehr langlebig und ein echter Kerl. Arbeitslos nach dem Krieg wird er Goldsucher, denn er hat ein ernsthafter Problem "My mind is evidently so constituted that I am subconsciously forced into the path of duty without recourse to tiresome mental processes. However that may be, I have never regretted that cowardice is not optional with me. " Er ist ein Fachidiot und Kopfarbeit ist nicht gerade seine Stärke (es sei denn, er rammt diesen jemanden in den Bauch). Auf der Flucht vor pösen, pösen Idianern, die seinen Mienenpartner mit Pfeilen gespickt haben, verirrt sich Carter in eine Höhle, die anscheinend mit giftigen Gasen gefüllt ist, verliert das Bewusstsein und wacht auf dem Mars wieder auf. Wie er dahin kam? Keine Ahnung, immerhin, er ist nackt und muss somit nicht mehr täglich darüber nachdenken, wie man Schürsenkel bindet, denn während er auf dem Mars lebt (10 Jahre lang) bleibt er im Adamskostüm, genau wie die Frauen (nur im Evaskostüm).
Auf dem Mars ist Carter ein echter Supermann. Aufgrund der geringeren Anziehungskraft ist er stärker und kann springen wie ein Grashüpfer, dumm nur, dass er trotzdem gleich am ersten Tag von grünen Marsianern gefangengenommen wird. Aber Carter hat mehr Glück als Verstand. Aus Versehen tötet er immer mal wieder ranghohe Marsianer und erbt dadurch deren Rang und Besitztümer, was zu einer seltsamen Konstellation führt: Er ist ein Gefangener, dennoch darf er befehlen und man muss ihm gehorchen. Er ist ein Außerirdischer aber dennoch auch Klanchef. Die grünen Marsianer können ihn ach ihrem Ehrenkodex also nur auf zwei Arten töten: durch Befehl des Oberzampanos Tal Hajus im Zweikampf oder in Selbstverteidigung. Was für ein Glück für Carter, denn die grünen Marsianer stehen auf langsames Foltern als abendliche Unterhaltung.
Nachdem Carter binnen weniger Tage schnell mal die Sprache der Marsianer in Perfektion gelernt hat lernt er die Liebe seines Lebens kennen: Dejah Thoris, Tochter von Mors Kajak von Helium. OK, die ist eine eierlegende Außerirdische, aber trotzdem sexy, auch wenn sie eher wie eine Rothaut, denn eine ordentliche Europäerin aussieht. Klar tut Carter alles, um Dejah für sich zu gewinnen und wunder sich "I verily believe that a man's way with women is in inverse ratio to his prowess among men."

Am etwas ätzenden Tonfall der Zusammenfassung merkt man schon, das Buch ist aus heutiger Sicht, streckenweise nervig und dümmlich, voller Logikfehler und eher für männliche Leser. Klar, grüne Marsianerinnen sind auch gefährliche Kämpferinnen, gefährlicher als die männlichen, dennoch sind sie es die Kochen, reparieren und Waffen herstellen. Dejha, eine rote Marsianerin ist ein Männertraum: sexy, extrem leicht bekleidet und nicht sonderlich helle. Auch sie hinterfragt nicht, wie Carter auf den Mars kam, denn "why should I trouble my poor head with such a problem, when my heart tells me that I believe because I wish to believe!"
It was good logic, good, earthly, feminine logic, and if it satisfied her I certainly could pick no flaws in it.
Und so geht es in einem fort. Carter ist der strahlende Möchtegernheld. Er will Dejha befreien und wieder nach Hause bringen und stellt sich dabei nicht sonderlich helle an. Es geht von einer Gefangenschaft zur nächsten. Carter befreit sich und rettet die Situation durch reine Muskelkraft und

Die Szene kann ich mir für einen Film richtig gut vorstellen. Kitsch lass nach.

Massenmord aus Liebe, das wäre doch mal eine neue Ausrede vor dem Kriegsverbrechertribunal.

Dazu noch ein wenig Sozialkritik und böser, böser Sozialismus "A people without written language, without art, without homes, without love; the victim of eons of the horrible community idea. Owning everything in common, even to your women and children, has resulted in your owning nothing in common", um so was wie Anspruch und Sozialkritik anlingen zu lassen und nicht ganz wie ein Groschenheft daherzukommen.

Fazit: Handlungsarm, milde ausgedrückt. Dazu noch der Radiumhype. Alles was neu und technisch ist ist Radiumbetrieben, damals en vogue war, sogar in Kosmetika. Heute stehen Frauen auf sexy Außerirdische, damals standen Männer auf leichtbekleidete sexy Außerirdische und Vampire, das ist echte Emanzipation.
Damals war das Buch auch in Deutschland erfolgreich und erlebte 1925 mehrere Auflagen und ist der erste Band der Barsoom series

This is a type of science fiction that is pure fantasy, there are no fancy explanations of technology here. This was written in a time that there were simple rockets, but no one really believed we'd be able to put a person in space, so it's interesting to see how people thought of other worlds. Needless to say, Mars in this book is not the dull frozen planet we've seen in the news, but a lush moss covered world brimming with bizarre creatures, developed technologies and politics. What is described in this book is a whole new world created of pure imagination, with bizarre creatures, romance, heroism, exploration and discovery, and non stop action. I LOVED this book, I couldn't put it down. You find find anything described realistic, but the plot and imagination will grab you. If you like pure escapism, this is definitely the read. It concerns an army man who is suddenly transported to Mars and immediately has to start dealing with the various political forces and creatures and dangers there.
