“The prince of darkness is a gentleman!” ― William Shakespeare, King Lear

From the classic horror of Bram Stoker, infused with the flavor of Anne Rice’s romance, comes a whole new story of intrigue and danger.

London, 1893. A tide of gloom and fear rises from the dark heart of Europe, taking aim at the modern world. A student of sciences, recently returned from Paris, finds herself caught between the man she's promised to marry and a mysteriously hypnotic stranger; even as her best friend struggles with an unknown illness and bloodless bodies are being found at an alarming rate. A professor with a troubled history comes to the aid of a former student, a doctor hopelessly in love with the same dangerously ill woman desired by his closest friends. You know their names. You may have even known their story. But not now. Witness a delicious new vision of the classic horror tale as you go on a journey into the awakening of Mina Murray. Erotic, action-packed, and absolutely frightening, this is Prince Dracula.

Excerpt from the pages of Prince Dracula:

When they reached the room, he slid his free hand into a pocket and retrieved the key. As he turned the key in the lock, he never released her hand. Only when he finished and pushed the door open did he step back and gesture broadly, inviting her to enter the room.
Even in the dim glow of low lamplight, Mina could see the opulence of the suite. The décor communicated nothing so much as wealth and indulgence. She turned back to Vlad as he shut the door.
“Are we to dine here, or did you make a reservation?” she asked.
A twitch of amusement crossed his face. “Were you under the impression that I’d invited you for dinner?”
Mina paused. He was correct, of course; the note had said nothing about it. “I apologize for my assumption, but that was what I thought.”
Vlad walked toward her. “I said that I wanted to see you.”
She looked up into his eyes as he stopped you front of her. “And now you have seen me.”
He smiled. Warm. Confident. “Yes, but not nearly enough.”
Mina said, “Vlad, I—” and the rest of her words disappeared in the crush of his kiss, the firm pressure which she found more than welcome. She ran her hands up his arms, felt his face. He held her tightly around the waist with one arm. His free hand touched her lightly on the neck, and then he raised it slightly as he ran the tips of his fingers through her hair.
She reached up and tossed her hat aside, and then pulled away from him long enough to pull a ribbon from her hair. The blonde waves cascaded over her shoulders as she found his kiss again.
Vlad pushed the hair off her shoulders and moved his lips down to kiss her there. She recalled what followed the last time that he did that. Her hands went his hair, urging him to continue. This time, she was aware of the material moving from her shoulders and down her arms.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Prince Dracula Satisfies the Bloodlust Dracula Fans Have Been Waiting For!!! 10. April 2015
Von Brendan Sellaro - Veröffentlicht auf
Mr. Brownfield outdoes himself with his book Prince Dracula! I have been searching for a great, new, modern take on Dracula for sometime, and Prince Dracula has everything I was looking for. The book retains the characteristics of Stoker's original, but is much more character driven. Instead of written in epistolary format, Brownfield writes it in a traditional form and because of this, we get to really explore the characters further. There is a much deeper connection especially with Mina, Lucy, Van Helsing, and of course Dracula himself.

The great thing about this novel is all the little details and nods to Dracula as a franchise. Brownfield knows his history and his horror, and does a really great job of combining all of the best elements of Dracula that we have seen over the years into the perfect format that fans like myself have been waiting for, from the Hammer films of the 60s, the 1992 film with Gary Oldman in the lead role, and even the historical feel of Universal's recent Dracula Untold, all this while staying true to Stoker's original vision, as well as the spirit of Dracula as a character.
And the easter eggs! Mr. Brownfield knows the way to a true horror fan's heart. Not to spoil too much, but the little nods to Nosferatu (Orlok), Carmilla, and even the old penny dreadful characters of Varney and Ruthven are simply spectacular! It's like geeking out at a Marvel movie, seeing all of the little heroes and extra surprises thrown out and about. And Van Helsing's character is written exquisitely. In fact, it's probably the best written interpretation of the character I've seen in quite a long time.

If you love the gothic feel of the old Hammer films and have been dying, pun intended, for a refreshing take on the character, this is the book for you. Also check out some of Brownfield's other work. I was led to this novel after seeing mention of it in the Blood Queen comic series Mr. Brownfield writes for Dynamite Comics. I happened to discover Blood Queen and picked up the first series and annual, looking for something to satiate my hunger for a great retro horror book. Blood Queen delivers. It deals with Elizabeth Bathory who, for fans that don't jump at the name like I do, was an historical figure who supposedly bathed in the blood of virgins to sustain her youth. She was also used as a model for Dracula and the modern archetypal vampire that we know and love today. Definitely check out the comics because the newest series has her going against Dracula himself! The impressive thing about these books is you can almost fit them into one cohesive universe, and being that Dynamite also published Prince Dracula, I hope to see a greater universe develop and the story to continue (fingers crossed!). I hope Mr. Brownfield continues the story of Prince Dracula because I can't wait to see what happens where the book leaves off. Bravo Mr. Brownfield and thanks for the great ride!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Showed Promise 1. September 2014

The story of Stoker's iconic Dracula, a villain embodying evil, has been explored from nearly every angle. Yet not until Troy Brownfield's "Prince Dracula" is the tale viewed through the filter of a strong, independent female - Miss Mina Murray. The premise sounded original enough. Or as original as you can be when retelling a classic. Unfortunately, the plot and the supporting characters lack depth. Enhancing the descriptive language would provide simple insight into the men and Mina' s motives, desires, etc, and add needed layers. The author also relies too heavily on graphic sensual scenes to convey the psychological-hold Dracula has on his female victims. Yes, the prevailing commentary is that Dracula represents lust and sexuality, unbridled passions; and in Victorian England, to express carnal desires outside of marriage was a sin. Dracula was the ultimate bad boy and Van Helsing and his brood the guys that'll save the virgin -and slay the whore. But Stoker's Prince conveys sexuality in his intimate kisses and suggestions. This author does it with sneaking, and lies, and bodice ripping...and more. I skip over those passages to the story telling. Once I got past the hot-and-heavy, the author tried to twist the classic again, making this Dracula tale his own. Brownfield already tells his story via Mina' s eyes, but that's not enough different for him. I will not give spoilers, but I found the ending to be completely implausible. I couldn't connect with the author's heroine, so I was not overly invested in the story.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Meek Mina No more 15. September 2014
Von Bella View - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I've always found Mina to be an underdeveloped character in Stoker's Dracula. And the countless film adaptations of Dracula have only led to play upon the supposed weakness of the female sex. So when I read the description - that this adaption turned the tables on the Meek Mina stereotype - I had to give it a read. Let's see where Mina takes her clan of merry vampire hunters in book two...
